Funny how easy this stuff is when you have an actual assembly manuals. Classic Roadsters’ manual includes specific directions on cutting and straightening the Beetle turn signal stalk to keep it away from the flat steering wheel and within the 15″ diameter.

As the local Mopar guy (I have a 65 Plymouth Satellite Convertible) I’m sorry to say, “close but no cigar”. That there is a a 1962 Dodge Polara. The 413 wedge with the cross ram is what makes it rare. That and being, shall we say, not the best design to come out of Ma Mopar in the 60’s! šhttp://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/mmo1200.html

Type IV motor may not fit. You need to measure carefully. By the same token, there are adapter kits for Subaru flat fours, but again, they may not fit under your MG bodywork. But these cars weigh about 1900 pounds, give or take a few. You most likely do not need to go to something like Jake’s massive Type IV. He does build GREAT engines though! I…[Read more]

Yeah. And in 1983 when I built my Duchess I definitely didn’t know it all! Thought I did tho!
I should have checked out some real TDs. Had I done that I would not have mounted my license plate the way I did. -

I edited the response after you posted that Larry.
I think most of ’em bolt to the side of the rear cover, some are perpendicular, some match the slope of the engine cover.
Funny, I’m not even sure how my Duchess’ bracket is attached. I’ve got to look at it tonight.PMOSSBERG40372.3888078704 -

On an original TD, the bracket mounts to an extension that I believe attaches to the rear tire carrier.
On most replicas I’ve seen, the bracketĀ mounts to aĀ flat steel/aluminum, bent at a ninety degree angle and bolted to the side of theĀ rear engine cover/tank cover.PMOSSBERG40372.3883680556 -

Staying with a local machine shop that has provided engines to a number of VW buddies. Used case that was taken to a machine
shop and aligned bored, opened to 90.5 and case insert added (the head studs bores are
increased and small threaded inserts are tapped and screwed into the case
then the head studs are screwed in, increased bite to avoid…[Read more] -

So I’m sure you’ve all been on the edge of your seats wondering what’s up.Well, life has gotten in the way and I still have not pulled the engine.Meanwhile, I’ve decided it’s time to dump the 1641 and upgrade to a 1776. I got good deal on a long-block which is on it’s way. I will be able to use the top end off my 1641. And I’m buying new cooling…[Read more]

Vintage Air is pricey. But you will see their units in a lot of high dollar street rods. I understand they do produce a quality product.

Talked with the owner of one of the “best damn garages” in NJ today. From my description of events, he thinks, the pushrod was working it’s way off the rocker arm and just before it dropped free, it got caught up on the rim of the pushrod cup. That would mean of course that the rocker arm would open the valve further than intended. Which would…[Read more]

I ran using the odometer as my gas gauge for 27 years. The stock VW sending unit in my Duchess’ gas tank reached only half way into the tank. So “empty” meant half full! This spring, I finally found a universal gauge with the correct resistance for the VW. Now I actually know how much gas I have! Of course then the engine blew. (:

Improvisation works…for comedy, music and fixing cars!I am familiar with the duct tape & bobby pin approach to automotive repair. And once in the middle of Mexico, I helped a cab driver repair the throttle linkage on a VW microbus with bailing wire (true story). But this is the first official toilet paper roll fix-it story I’ve ever heard. Good…[Read more]
