Dan and gang;
Yeah, I’m thinking whatever is going on I’m looking at replacing most everything I run into. Once I tear into it I might as well R&R as much as I can, other wise I’m looking at not trusting her again and that would be a shame.
If this were winter time I’d feel better about this, I hate missing good driving weather.

Update
Gave it a short crank over when I got home. Gas is sprayin up out of the carb. Not a leak… an atomized like spray. Somethings way out of time to do that.
Paul, the distributor seems tight, can’t pull it up or twist by hand.
I’ll cut off the gas and drain the float bowl for safety then try the other stuff to cover all the angles. ie,…[Read more] -

I haven’t checked anything else since last night. The tow driver offered the idea that there’s some drive off the belt system that works the dissy and thus the possible jumping time (?). This is my first OHC so I’ll have to get the basics down for checking it out.It was running well at 40 MPH, then nothing. No hiccup, no backfire, no missing th…[Read more]

Gang Most modern pumps have much more sensitive nozzles than even a few years ago. Seems too many people causing too many spills. Since the pump cut off relies on back pressure the only solution is to not put the nozzle in as far when fueling and to slow down a little. A little extra time sure beats a spill on your paint.Ringo

That’s more like it! Three weeks is easy when you’re dealing with wiring. Nice, well marked kits and a second set of eyes/hands/brains are the only way to go!
I feel better about my skills now.

Man, I HATE it when my links are no longer active. The sites with the duraspark upgrade are still there, but talk about the need for a duraspark distributor. If there is 3 wires now coming out of the dissy then the duraspark is addable without a new dissy. The MSD site still has wiring hookup diagram for the pertronix and in fact the MSD m…[Read more] -

Most stock VW tanks were right at 10.5 gal. This is trusting my memory, so someone may have a more accurate answer.
There are several good books on VWs that are well worth the purchase. John Muir’s “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive ” , and the Bentley publishers Volkswagen Service Manuals. both are available on Amazon. I’d get the Mui…[Read more] -

If you want to get all the advantages of electronic ignition with the pertronix you can add a stock Duraspark module, or an MSD, or both to get the max spark obtainable. Takes just a little wiring under the hood. Well worth the effort since the pertronix unit by itself doesn’t increase the spark that much but does do away with point p…[Read more] -

Glad to hear it was an easy fix. I checked my problem this weekend and found it was hitting the bump stops, not maxxing out the shocks. The shocks are fine, fairly new, and they are pretty much in the mid range with car at rest.
So I went old school and got coil spring boosters, (twist in aluminum “plugs”) from Mr. Gasket. In my younge…[Read more] -

With 2 people my chevette rear bottoms out on occasion. Sometimes on bumps that I think are not that bad. I had wondered about a fix myself. Shocks seem to work OK, but maybe the springs are worn or wrong cut?
Hopefully maybe someone will enlighten us on a fix (or a diet that works
)

Guys
I got to thinking about the wife saying no air horns on the other cars. The last time she popped a hood was 1996!
I’m puttin’ air horns on all of ’em!!! Always thought louder was better and she won’t know until she uses it, then she’s bound to like it……. Right?…

So did the gauge go all the way to full after filling? If so, you can’t beat perfect!

RollieWelcome to the group.I go by if they can’t see me, they sure should hear me. I’ve got a set of air horns with on board compressor that’s loud enough to peel paint at close range.
Is it “right”? No. Has it saved my bacon? Yes. If my wife would let me, I’d have ’em in all my vehicles. Too many people driving around in sound proof coc…[Read more] -

Welcome to the group!
Since you describe the tank as rectangular, I really doubt it’s a stock tank. Chevette and Pinto tanks are flatter than what I would call rectangular, so the only way to be sure of capacity is to measure dimensions.
You might want to test the sender with an OHM meter to see if it’s in spec. My experience says re…[Read more] -

When I first got the Duchess, took off the wind wings. Put them back on cause they did help and I thought they looked good.
How much do they help? Depends on speed. Like the older cars with vent windows, when they were open they definitley cut down on turbulence coming through the main door window. In a convertable they help mainly at l…[Read more] -

No intention of sounding impatient, just thought the short answer was all that was needed.
As to where to look, wish I knew. I’d start at some of the VW vendors like CP1, or a quick google search. Some of the guys here probably have specific places to go. Seems that some have had luck with Ebay.
