Yea I know — but I recently got a “73 in a 50″ speeding ticket from an unmarked DMV officer — partially because I can’t see/read the speedometer — big numbers on the BCW speedo are kph and the mph #’s are tiny…plus I’m 5′ 3” tall and can’t really see the speedo between/over the steering wheel. Of course, test driving the 200 HP engine to…[Read more]

I do not run a fuel pump relay on mine. I only added a horn relay recently. Probably didn’t need it. I found the intermittent operation was a ground short in the switch in the wheel. I put that relay behind the grille above the horns.

you may want to try going with welting that uses a different diameter cord in the center. The local fabric shop sells the welting cord in various diameters for pennies a yard — cheap enough for experimentation.
Bigger or smaller than stock cord folded into a strip of appropriately colored vinyl may be worth a try??? -

Nice job, Jack. It looks real good. With Roy’s help you’ll have the whole car refinished before you’re done.

If you mean the black edging between the fiberglass and the dash — I got some black welting from my local discount fabric store — you can probably get it from a fabric store that handles marine fabric/automotive fabric. Also the fender welting is carried in different finishes and colors by MG Magic ht…[Read more]

You could give Brad a call anyway and see if maybe he has a couple squirreled away someplace.

Hey Derek,
Finding something to edge the panel if I had made it out of a sheet of aluminum was a big problem for me. I had purchased some Chrome metal (I thought – turned out to be plastic) glue-on channel edging –WalMart automotive section–but bending it around the corners was a problem — it looked like plastic edging on an aluminum panel and… -

Half inch plywood is just the ticket. Mine goes on L brackets with studs, and I even made a tool tray that fit underneath.

MG Magic had those for a long time – I bought a pair a couple of years ago ( maybe more ) and think I paid 85.00 for the pair on special. Might give them a call as well.

When I was assembling my FF kit I followed the instruction manual and nothing in the front end would fit. Nothing would line up. I ended up calling the factory in Florida and was told to disregard the manual. The manual tells you to start from the front and work back. They start at the back and work front. Don’t know why that would make a…[Read more]

Hey Ed,
…if you take Bill up on his offer to ride shotgun to Va Beach, you can drive Emma around the block, over the river, and through the woods and compare/contrast a BCW with a big-ass, bad-ass (maybe stupid-ass as well) 2332 air-cooled with a modern, water-cooled, boxer-powered one…….hope to see you there -

Thanks, Roy. No, 12-pt socket. Because they are 12-pt bolt heads. Will get back after it tonight.

Re: seizing the engine, VW has a cam like pawl that locks into the flywheel gear. Might work on a Subi. Else, loosen and remove two of the flywheel bolts and bolt in a nice long piece of angle iron.

Ed, forgive me, but you are using a 6pt socket, right? No 12pt stuff…and you may have more luck with an air impact driver. Sometimes even the hand-held variety where you whack it with a hand sledge will break them free.

Gave up on getting the heads off tonight. Couldn’t loosen the first bolt even with a 6-ft pry bar. Started stripping the flats that way (i.e. “CLINK!” “Ahh, got it. Oh crap!”) so I stopped. Then I noticed I’d forgotten to remove the cam sprockets so I shouldn’t be taking the heads off anyway yet. First I have to reinstall the timing belt. Again.…[Read more]

The motor will sit nicely on the top of a 55 gallon drum. Smart thinking to resurface the heads. With David coming to VA Beach my stuff will be in his car. Wanna ride shotgun?

Engine on stand.
uhh. Had to make the stand twice because it was too tall the first time at 36 inches, a height I chose simply because I happened to have four 2x4s at that length exactly & wanted to save cuts. Could not lift the engine high enough to drop it on that without major adjustments. Some of you will remember that I have a proper steel… -

Ed, are you taking the heads to a machine shop, just because you have the engine out and therefore it’s easy? I’m not familiar with Subaru but are you expecting the heads to be warped? Anyway, I wish you the best.
