There will be a wire from the ECU to a relay up there. The fan will be wired to the battery with a 15 amp fuse, and the ECU should tell it what to do.

edward ericson replied to the topic BCW unfinished kit in VA in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
Could make an electric of it. The grill shell looks good. The headlight brackets are not BCW. CMC maybe. Weird that it has a BCW ID plate–if it does.
BCW did not start producing TD kits, I think, until maybe mid-1980? I wonder if the Fusseneggers bought Fiberfabs and built them for sale in the early going. -

Another beautiful day. With no driveability issues, it was time to give Cooper a ride.

edward ericson replied to the topic Running fuel line in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
This is a steel fuel line or a rubber one?
Either way, putting it in PVC like it’s an AC wire buried in the back yard sounds like overkill, possibly complicating the job needlessly. I would consider a PVC or other conduit if the line were running under the car, outside the tunnel, however. As for me, i copied the Subaru I’m using as a parts car:… -

Fifty years ago, when I graduated from one of our finer schools (unc), it was a perfectly acceptable descriptive term amongst engineers. I was not studying linguistics, but Physics. I had a talent for math and took math courses for all my electives. Ended up with an unintended math degree after 3yrs. In defence of my limited vocabulary, I lat…[Read more]

Unless bcw made some kits I’m not familiar with? Hood hinge and lock mechanism is not bcw, windscreen mount doesn’t fold and is not bcw, and engine cover not bcw. Looks like a fiberfab with a bcw plate that someone had laying around. Early vw wheels. No tach. …what is that chrome hangy-down thingy to the right of the instrument clus…[Read more]

edward ericson replied to the topic sorry, typo, it's a 912 swap with a 5 speed! in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
I’d repeat everything in my post except the “have to swap the ring & pinion.”
Again, it’s a dream rig. The five speed alone would make yours an elite runner. But I would caution anyone to learn more about the ins and outs before attempting it.I have to ask:1. What does he mean by “modified” Type 4? What are the modifications, who did them, and what… -
edward ericson replied to the topic Soob swap in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
Upper radiator bracket is done.
It’s aluminum angle, trimmed, bent and drilled. I only bent it a little, but I did heat it up with a torch first because I am that paranoid. Now just gotta get some captivated nuts on it for the fan, make a couple angle brackets low down for the fan, and then it’s on to the shroud.I think I’ll stop here and start the wires. -
edward ericson replied to the topic 914 engine and transaxle swap?? in the forum VW Based Kits 11 years, 4 months ago
Would have to be modified substantially as the 914 was a mid-engine car. Laying the setup in a TD would put the Type 4 engine right about where your butt is supposed to be.
That said,1. The Type 4 is a stronger, more durable engine. Worth having if you can, and2. The 914 transaxle is a 5-speed, which is awesome, and can be converted for use in a… -
