She was Beautiful! Yellow paint with Black leather interior! The engine was a supped up VW 1776 with dual carbs! the entire front end was storage and when you opened the Boot, it was black carpet with mirrors showing off the 6 disk CD changer and the security system! She was amazing!!! I had always hoped to see her driving around Redlands or Yucaipa but I never saw her again…

She was The One That Got Away!!! LOL

But don’t tell The Penny Marie I said that!!!

    She’s a Real Beauty!!!

The one I looked at and tried to buy had racing screens rather than a proper windshield. This way, you’re avoiding the mandatory racing goggles! LOL

    I sure like it!!!

Just be mindful of the fire hazard. I was watching an episode of Fast and Loud, when one of their fiberglass projects caught fire. They had to rush to put it out quick. I think they were working on that Vet they did for Hot Wheels!

And the idea of the Tape is brilliant! that helps to reduce the chipping on the topside of the project. And what ever tool you choose to use, always use a fine blade and buy a few since they dull fast, while cutting fiberglass…

    Just a safety reminder…

Have a fire extinguisher handy. Fiberglass is VERY prone to catch fire and when it does, it burns fast! you never know what your blade might touch and set off some sparks that might catch fire. It’s always better to be safe than sorry…

I almost bought the kit you’re talking about. They’re beautiful cars and the one I looked at had a front hood that was hinged and opened on both sides! The Volkswagon was accessed in the rear by lifting the back trunk that was also hinged! It was soooo Cool! It wouldn’t start, when I wanted to test drive it so the dealer told me that they would fix the problem (a starter relay switch) and I’d return to test drive it in a couple days…When I returned, in a couple days, the car was sold! I was broken hearted but a month later, they had my MG kit car on the lot and I bought it. I’ve loved her ever since!

I’d also love to see some pictures of your ride!!!

    Happy Easter Everyone

I’m sorry for starting a new subject on the Carlisle topic but I can’t figure out how to start a new thread yet. Yup, still your Village idiot!

I just wanted to wish you all a happy Easter and to tell you that I found this cool video on You Tube!

Look up “Classic Cars in Movies-MG TD”…It’s a history of our cars in Film! It was posted back in march and I just found it so I’m still calling it Hot out of the Oven!!! Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

Much Love, My Brothers and Sisters…

    And Please stay safe!!!

I’ve never had them lock up with drum brakes but I’m not sure how she will be with disks. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. In the meantime, I avoid hard braking at all costs…I really hate cleaning out the car after I’ve dirtied my pants!!! 😯

For what its worth, I removed my ballast all together. I’ll be changing the stance with drop spindles, when I change out the front brakes. Until then, I’ve driven her many times without it and haven’t had any problems…I like the extra space I have up in the Boot…I use the fiberglass box, that held the pea gravel, to hold tools and etc…

    Great!

May I ask if yours was attached the same way as mine…That is once you got that heavy block of concrete out?

It must have been a tough job!

I own a Duchess and I removed my ballast box a few years ago. It was filled with pea gravel and it was only secured with 2 angle brackets that were screwed into the wooden top of the fiberglass box and then to the wooden frame just under the front of the trunk, by the grill. I removed the rocks and the box lifted right out.

    Hope this helps…

I haven’t seen anything about Knotts Berry Farm’s kit car show. I think they still have their Mustang and Fabulous Fords car show but I have a feeling that the kit car show is a thing of the past…Never the less, they are all closed up due to this quarantine. Even Disneyland is closed!!! I could always hear the nightly fireworks show, from my house…I sure miss it. I can’t wait until we can return to some kind of reality!

I pray that Carlisle remains a go, for our East Coast friends. We can all use an escape, even if only through pictures and great stories!

    Hey Gang

I wanted to revive this old post regarding a West Coast meet up. I had started to put something together but we lost momentum and then life got in the way…

As we’re all sitting at home on corona restriction, this might be a good time to revive the idea of a gathering. Besides, once again, Life has brought into focus the things that are really important…Family and Good Friends…And NEVER take Time for granted!!! It’s too darn Precious!!!

Let’s see if we can revive the idea of a West Coast get together, perhaps as soon as this fall, when it’s safer to go out and play??? I still think it’d be Biblical!!! LOL

    Any Thoughts?

    Dear Friends

A couple years ago, I tried to get something going, here in California. There was just a little bit of interest, from some of our members, but then it fizzled out. I’d still Love to start a meet-up, out here, in the Land of Surf and Sun…Sure, it’d be slow to start but who knows what it could turn into…I’m open to any ideas and would even help to put it together. It’d be nice to have something to look forward to, in these dark times…Perhaps this Fall, when it might be a little safer to venture out?

Let’s start a separate thread and get the conversation going…

My kit came with a bench type seat but I’m thinking about trading it in for a set of VW buckets…Has anyone had any luck with those or should I just have my wooden bench seats redone? It sounds like some of you have had problems with seats…I wouldn’t mind sitting a little lower to the ground but not at the expense of being any closer to the dash…

I’m afraid I’d have to start cutting down on Da Beers!!!

    Lol!!!

    Hey Gang

I still like my steering column renovation…Just like I previously wrote, I took out the old VW steering column and traded it for a steering rod. All the electric gets moved to the dash! It looks much more authentic and I have all the room me and my ageing pot belly need! LOL!

I could’ve run the shaft all the way to the steering box but I had the original “Crumple Fitting” from the column so I had it welded into the steering rod…Just in case I’m in an accident and my chest goes into the steering wheel…I’ve heard of people dying from a steering column that wouldn’t collapse…Just something to keep in mind while you’re working on the project…

I don’t chime in often but I value every member here…

I didn’t like the way my VW Column looked all together, so I took it out and put all the electrical on the dash. I replaced the column with a steering rod and had a welder custom weld a release bolt just above the Crash Basket. Now it’s just a chrome rod that is mounted through a steering mount I bought from Socal Speed Shop! It works like a charm and looks nice. It’s much closer to the dash and I added a flat Banjo style wheel from Forever Sharp!

    Might I make another suggestion…

Buying a title, online, or a junked Kit with a good title for cheap. then just move the info to the kit you’re hoping to buy…I’m too stupid to know any better but I plead the 5th and spread eagle and all that legal stuff…All I know is that sometimes, you’ve got to play as dirty as the bureaucrats to get anything done…I own a contracting business and it’s as dirty as it gets!

If need be, you’d just transfer all of the vin tags and register it as the junked car you bought. Then apply the info to the new toy and destroy the old documents. Cops don’t check when you get pulled over and they expect that engines tranys and most other items that have a vin are often changed since they wear out…The only ones that stay are the ones on the frame but they only check in that much detail at the border of San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico…And if they’re checking that deep, you’ve got bigger problems to worry about! Lol!…Believe me, I ought to know…I’ve been pulled over many times and even pulled over just to talk about my cool car…My butt still went Tweet Tweet Tweet! But knock on wood, no tickets and no questions about my title (69 grand duchess)!

I hope this helps…It sounds like you’re already in love with the car…

    Your Village Idiot…

P.S. You could also use this dilemma as a Bargaining Chip to get the car for much less! He already thinks he’s stuck with a White Elephant!

Good luck with the hunt! I had to part out a 29 Gazelle since I couldn’t get the darn thing smog approved and registered (Titled as a 99 special construction vehicle)! The guy at the smog shop told me “Hey, she’s a VW…If it’s not Smokin…It’s broken!” He thought it was funny, while I just returned home with my tail between my legs!

Yesterday, I was driving through Newport Beach…A posh neighborhood along PCH and I saw a Gazelle for sale…I pulled in just out of curiosity…I inquired of the price because they don’t put it on the sign, in that neighborhood…The owner told me $25,000! I laughed like Tom Hanks did, when the claw foot tub fell through the ceiling, in The Money Pit!!! I only paid a couple thousand for the Gazelle I tossed away…Then my tail fell off all together!!!

I can still hear Tom Hanks laughing, right now…

I did the same, with my toy. Marine Grade all the way! West Marine is where I purchased my fuse panel (12 fuse capacity), relays, switches and even the wire! I’ve yet to have a single problem, since I rewired her…I also went crazy with grounding posts. All of my electrical items are on it’s own fuse, relay, and ground connection. I just check the connections frequently. I have the peace of mind knowing that if anything ever goes out, there’s only a couple places I need to check. I also got rid of those mid line spade connectors that my kit was wired with…All of the wiring goes straight from point A to B and so on…

how-to-build-hotrods.com has a fantastic wiring schematic that I used to rewire The Penny Marie…It was even easier than the map I got from the VW shop for wiring up a new harness kit! It’s so simple even your Village Idiot could do it!!! AND I DID!!! Lol! They also have some other great advice on how to get things done, under the hood, I think you’ll like! Even a quick and easy guide for wiring up turn signals and hazard switches!

I literally started my wiring project with a bottle of beer, in one hand and clippers in the other…I went from front to back and Cut…Cut…Cut…The Old Stuff out. (Disconnecting and removing the Battery first!) Then I used the Schematic, from the website, and rebuilt her from Fresh Scratch!

    Hope this helps…

Living on the coast, we get a lot of fog and I drive at night, all the time…And when it’s sunny, it’s real sunny!!!

When it’s hard to see…I just tie a white stick with a red tip to the front bumper and get around much better! LOL!

In my case, the top is almost always down, except when it rains so the sun visors would be little help for me…I just wear wrap around dark shaded Oakleys to not only keep the sun out but any small debris that tends to land in my eyes, while I’m driving. Nothing worse than driving while trying to get something out of your eye!!!

At night, I swear by those yellow tinted glasses…I bought mine at CVS on their “As Seen on TV” isle…

    Hey Everybody!

I was wondering the same thing…My wife recently bought a new car and she doesn’t even need a key in the ignition! All she has to have is the key fob and push a button when she’s in the car! Then to stop the car, she just pushes a button. It’s pretty cool! If you don’t have the key fob, the car won’t start…I was wondering if it was possible for our cars!

I’m still working on the Nerf Missile launcher out the front grill!!!
