The Karmann Ghia won’t make it out of the paint shop in time for Carlisle.     But my wife and I are still going!    We’ll be going in the Silverado. Next year I hope to be going in my newly assembled TD. I say hope because you just never know what’ll get done when all you have is a back yard to work in.

I’ll go along with replacing the tin that was taken out of my London Roadster last summer.  That was an ill-advised move.  But I’m having trouble believing that thin metal plates will block heat significantly, knowing how uninsulated metal can transfer heat so easily.  I hear the reasoning, but I am still skeptical.

My car seems louder with the top up than down. Either the space is more confined as is the noise, or else in the open air the wind noise blocks it out. Get ear plugs if it bothers you, and it will also save your hearing!, and you will be less fatigued, especially on a long trip

Mystic,Like they said…YES. The engine noise is normal! No soundproofing, and you are sitting a couple feet in front of an air-cooled engine.

Top down and Ear plugs and a hoodie helps

With a VW based TD you are sitting where the rear seat used to be. There is very little room between you and the engine…about 18 inches. There isn’t much you can do to keep down the noise. I’ve read here that adding heat insulation in the engine compartment area helps some but other than that…..ear plugs.

I think your best bet is to go to some shop that has a lot of old VW junk engines in the back yard. 

If i need them where do i find them .Saw some on e bay awhile back. Jc whitney? does one size fit all? My engine is supposed to be 1600cc.
