Last night I saw the cylinders (“jug”) added, but again it was too dark for photos. I will take some pictures on Saturday morning. It’s beginning to look like a completed engine.

Paul… You are in our prayers. Although we have never met other than the connection on this forum, I understand the loss you are experiencing. I went through that with the loss of my mom a few years ago. But the pain of losing her will go away and be replaced with warm memories. And she will never be very far away.

From the Speedster site: original block of 40 rooms all booked up. More rooms to be set aside for Speedster/Spyder/MG peeps today or tomorrow. Apparently they’re honoring the rate anyway.

Thought I’d bring you up to date. I’ve decided that for less than the price of a fillup, I’d just install a new oil pump and see what that does for my pressure. I have convinced myself that my old pump is part of my low oil pressure problem. We’ll see. Christmas expenses have pushed my 3487 exhaust with spin on filter to later. FYI I have…[Read more]

HAR! Roy. One project at a time. I did install the Gene Berg oil temp dipstick late last season (thanks once again, Schu, for selling it), and so now I’ll at least know if/when she runs hot. Next up on that engine is setting the carb right so she’s not so damn rich–maybe then I’ll get better than the 24 mpg I’ve gotten since I got the car 2…[Read more]

Back when I was driving aircooled VWs, I regularly put 100k on engines, including 2 vans. I dropped the screen, torqued the heads and adjusted the valves at every 3000 mile oil change. It can be done. I’d put a spin on filter on one today. It’s a belt and suspender thing. It even acts like an oil radiator.
Has anyone checked the ther…[Read more] -

Ed, Since there are so many of us with a similar interest in a 3487 with a spin on filter, and you have a 3487 installed. And since you expressed an interest in a spin on filter adapter, wouldn’t it make most sense for you (since you are still gainfully employed) to buy and install one and then let us know how it went and what it did to your oil…[Read more]

The previous suggestions are all good ones and will probably provide a cure. Another, but not as likely culprit might be an unvented tank. Vacuum builds as fuel level goes down until the pump (which is meant to push, not pull) doesn’t receive an adequate supply.

Ed – with the EMPI 3487 muffler can you still use the heater boxes? You’d think that here in GA I wouldn’t need them but a typical winter we get down to the 30s during the day and 20s at night and heat is a nice thing to hve driving to worlk in the early mornings and colder winter days.

I have the same four oulet Paul and am changing out to the EMPI 3487 very soon. I think the single outlet looks great on the VW TDs and have admired it since Ed first posted photos of his. It is a shame you cant get it in ceramic. I plan to knock the factory paint off it and repaint it with high temp paint before installation. On my EMPI 4 tip the…[Read more]

Royal I am changing my exhaust to the EMPI 3487 before spring driving starts. My oil pump is a little on the weak side and I will probably replace it at the same time. Your talk of a spin on filter pump has me thinking of going that route. Even if the spin on filter is not needed, I look at it with the ” chicken soup cant hurt theory”. Filtering…[Read more]

I’m having an additional oil filter and pump added during my VW engine rebuild. It will increase my total oil capacity, and also keep oil up in the engine for starting. I think it will help in keeping engine temperatures down, especially in our hot Phoenix summers.

edward ericson replied to the topic Whatzit? (& oil pump question) in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 5 months ago
EMPI 3487 is like $80 and makes the exhaust look like a TD exhaust. Same size and location. Doesn’t hurt power & not too loud either.
Only trouble is getting it on. Or, actually, getting the old one off without busting a stud off the head. If your pipes are new that should not be a problem.
