Ringo, I ‘m glad you checked on this as the pictures and instructions were a little vague to my senior brain. It looks like the factory engineers designed it so it would not be user friendly.

Ed,
Checked the Haynes and it’s like Larry said, two piece cover with the bottom bolts of the water pump lookin’ like they’re behind the plate that surrounds the crank snout. -

Good tip!
But be aware that the metal polish is just that, a polish, and you will still need to wax the parts to protect them and keep the pitting from coming back even quicker. -

Ed, The Factory Chevette manual as well as the Haynes manual say that the crankshaft pulley and also the timing belt must be removed.
Is the pulley what is keeping you from getting to the bolts. Both books indicate that the pump can be removed with the engine in the car after removing fan and the alternator , AC, and PS belts as well as the ti…[Read more] -

Lots of great info on OEM (Pict-30 and 34’s) VW carb/distributor combinations on http://www.thesamba.com
One member, Glenn, is in Long Island, NY and is a VW/Bosch distributor EXPERT. He even sells completely restored units.
A few weeks agao, a guy posted a carb to distrbutor chart that would be very helpful to the VW based TD guys. -

I discovered a trick when I first got my MiGi. I f its running too lean you can manually richen the mixture by pushing the lever on the accelerator pump. It will run smoothly for a few seconds then get rough again. I have dual carbs so as long as one is working you can play with the other one. I found the passage to the 3 intermediate fuel supply…[Read more]

There’s quite the selection of stuff going on for 9/11. Lots of VFW, firefighter/cop/hero-tribute events. Probably the same everywhere. If I were going to one it might be the Dover AFB show. $10 in but you get food & a plaque & they say the extra goes to our men and women in harm’s way. They put the cars down with the airplanes at the AMC Air…[Read more]

Jack,
Is you Lafer a front engoine or rear engine?
If it is rear engined, i can provide wirign schematcs from Classic Roadsters. It really should not be that much doffernet from kit to kit.
If you really want to pull all the wiring, Ggoogle dune buggy wiring harnesses or street rod wiring harnesses. There are several sources out there. -

Dragon’s got some kind of SMART CAR rally going on the 17th. It’d sure be fun to crash that party with a couple TDs! Looks like the deadline’s passed to get the group hotel rate. . . .

I dunno. ‘cept for the frayed wires and the masking tape bits (are those labels?) it looks pretty normal to me. Those Lafers are “factory built” y’know!
What’s not working? why not trace out any bad circuits first, then slowly and methodically unplug everything from the back, one switch at a time, and remove each switch and reconnect under or away…[Read more]

Jack, Thanks for the pictures. It can look really scarey up under any dash but I can see that you have reason to be concerned. I saw at least three circuit breakers . Did the builder use breakers in stead of fuses or is the fuse panel just not shown in the pictures?
