Hi James,
The fact that it doesn’t make any noise when you accelerate makes me suspect drive train. In other words there could be “play” somewhere that tightens up under torque conditions. Have you thoroughly checked out the drive shaft univeral joints? They can be very noisy when worn but quiet as a mouse under torque. Just a guess.

Ringo…Racer Walsh in Florida and Esslinger’s in California may have what you need. They are basket type. They were on the car when I got it. They are not stainless and are very tough to maintain. The manufacturer is Western. Why not convert to an Alternator? All of the VW vendors offer these kits that include everything you need except the “stand” which is simple to swap. It eliminates the external voltage regulator too. Alternators are much more efficient too.
