Thanks for all the tips.
I had started with the process of elimination at the beginning of the investigation…..I have ruled out the tail light lens
.
I’ll try the reverse and see how that goes. Thanks again,
I had a U-Joint fail on my Scout on the interstate at 75 MPH. Fortunately it was the one at the rear end and not at the transmission. The…[Read more] -

Hey Rich,
I had the same exact problem about 3 years ago. There is a very easy fix. I found a replacement disk at NAPA auto parts for about $3.00. This one was made out of rubber (It looked like the same black rubber material a radiator hose is made of, just several layers and sewn together). To reinstall it it’s much easier if you remove th…[Read more]

James,
Larry has a good point. If it is U-Joints, shifting between first/reverse should give a definite “clunk”. Jiggling by hand would typically not apply enough torque to be a valid test. Could be something else as well, but these things are all about testing and process of elimination.

James, Did you try it in reverse ? If I am thinking right, that would have the same effect on the u joints as deaccelleration . If you check it on the stands, you might try apply the brakes lightly . If the u joints have grease fittings, you could also try lubing them as well. I may be way out of the park on this ,but it would be easy to try…[Read more]

Rich,
Good point. I did grab the driveshaft and twist back and forth, but never put my eye on the U-joints. In the twisting back and forth everything felt firm and tight. Tomorrow it will be sunny and warm, springtime day, so I’ll put her on the stands and check them out. Thanks for the tip. I do believe you’re correct about the drivetrain, if it…[Read more] -

Hi James,
The fact that it doesn’t make any noise when you accelerate makes me suspect drive train. In other words there could be “play” somewhere that tightens up under torque conditions. Have you thoroughly checked out the drive shaft univeral joints? They can be very noisy when worn but quiet as a mouse under torque. Just a guess.
Good luck!

Ringo, Thanks for the great answer, im gonna get started on it as soon as the snow melts. One more question for anyone. The wife loves the trunk made by warren in one of these topics? Anyone know what he used to paint the inside, and what was used to separate the gas tank from the rest of the trunk? The pictures look awesome and she wants to w…[Read more]

Ringo…Racer Walsh in Florida and Esslinger’s in California may have what you need. Racer Walsh is primarily road racing stuff and Esslinger builds circle track Midget engines (USAC, etc.) the 2.3L Ford Lima engine is one of the engines they have tons of parts for. I posted the link for the $135 Esslinger Aluminum Valve Cover.

Hi WolfpowRefinishing your current dash should look great with the least amount of work. You still need to take it off the car to make sure you dont scar up the gauges. Mark all the wires and where they connect. Don’t trust your memory. Once off it’s a simple matter of removing the old varnish with 120 grit sand paper, progressing to 180 un…[Read more]

Thanks for the great info ringo. Your Dash looks so, cool. Any advice on how to refinish the wood on mine? For now we want to sand it and finish it but not sure what to use, like regular wood finish or something for out door wood?

James Cochran replied to the topic Faded Tail Light Lenses – Tip in the forum TD Replicas 17 years ago
My car was missing both lens on the front turn signals. When a truck passed me on the highway I noticed some amber lens on some running lights that appeared to be the right size. I stopped at a truck stop and bought a couple of the amber lens for less than a dollar each. The lens fit perfectly by slipping over the end of the chrome housing. I…[Read more]

Neil,
They are basket type. They were on the car when I got it. They are not stainless and are very tough to maintain. The manufacturer is Western. The center hubs have since broken (pot metal) and I located some spinners on ebay. I now have four two-wing spinners in place of the center hubs. In the photo the wires look good, but get closer and…[Read more] -

Are your wheels real wires, or basket types. They look pretty nice! If they’re the real thing, could you tell me what the manufacturer is, and where to get them? Thanks Neil Flaherty, Gilford, NH BCW TD Replica -

Was curious as to what the manufacturer on your steering wheel was, and or where one might be purchased.
