  • The hydraulic self-contained setups are made by Neal, among many others. You can position them anywhere you want fore and aft,if you use the throttle setup on them you have to keep it close to the tunnel for the cable to feed into.I have that setup in one of mine and did not use the Neal throttle.I used a stock type pedel and moved the hyd.assembly…[Read more]

  • The reason for the hydraulic system is more for the clutch. After a full days driving my left knee hurts for about three days.
A number of years ago I had a Karman Ghia and the same thing happened.
I was much younger then and could “grin and bear it”. Now that I’m older and finically able to do so I want the “easy way out”!
    I also need the…[Read more]

  • Bill,
I replaced my front drums w/ disc’s this last Fall. Not to hard – make sure you bleed the system well – a pressure system works best. The change helped my car a lot. Why are you going hydraulic? The system w/ the disc’s works great. If you are on a 73 It should have a dual MC in it and should work fine – just bleed well. I think all the…[Read more]

  • Some points to remember:
The Chevette based cars have front and rear coil springs. The fronts may be able to be trimmed shorter due the coil having an “unshaped” end that usually sits in a shaped “pocket” in the lower control arm. I believe the rear coils are “shaped” on both ends and can’t just be cut shorter and reinstalled.
    The Ford based…[Read more]

  • Hi Ed,

Nice looking car! My Chevette based TD is on blocks in storage at this time,(upstate NY is kinda cold for these cars) so I can’t help you now. When warmer weather gets closer & its back on the wheels again I will be happy to check the dimension you are looking for. I know my springs were cut to the assembly specks.

  • The year of the VW frame can be adequately determined by looking at the # of lug nuts on the wheels WITHOUT WHEEL ADAPTERS). If it has a “wide 5” bolt pattern (5 lugs) it’s 1967 or older. If it’s a “normal” looking 4 lug, it’s a 1968 or up.
The earlier cars (wide 5) had swing axle rear suspension and king-pin front ends. Only the 1967 was 12 volts…[Read more]

  • Moss Motors is a supplier of restoration parts for classic MGs and many other vintage British sports cars.
    http://www.mossmotors.com/
They have never produced an MG kit car.
As Keith wrote, street prices are all over the palce for kit cars. Even more so than originals, a kit’s value depends very much on the qlauity of the assembly and condition.…[Read more]

  • I don”t think there is any figure as to what these bring.I see prices all over the place.I bought a driver that needed a repaint and a top for $2500.I have seen asking prices of $7-$9000.  I have no idea if any of them sold.I bought a runner for $700,put another $1500.in it,but I will never get the money back for the time I put in it.You can…[Read more]

I think the Volvo would be a real good choice for one of these cars. You are probably going to have to make your own frame, you can either pick up an aborted or abandoned project or look for a new unbuilt kit.A lot of people built these and after a year or two the novelty wears off and they get parked out back to rot. There are unbuilt ones out…[Read more]

Welcome Blue Horse,  sounds like you have an interesting set-up in your mind and would make a super little car w/volvo drivetrain .  Do you have a kit yet, or are you looking for one?  Most are out of production that I know about but you may be lucky enough to find a kit that was never put together  and can start  ‘out of the box’ with your buil…[Read more]

  • Another option for a little more “yank” is a 2.8 or 3.0L GM V6 from an S-10 pick-up or a Generation III Camaro. These are “longitudinal” (Rear Wheel Drive)and are small enough due to their 60 degree configuration to fit.
These are also easier to find than the Ford 60 degree 2.8L V6’s and the GM V6 has a vibrant “aftermarket” for hop-ups. You won’t…[Read more]

  • Hi Gary,
I know of no specific MGTD Replica Clubs other than this forum. I’m sure there must be some car clubs in the Tampa area that are kit car friendly, maybe even a kit car club?
My buddy (retired) lives in Wesley Chapel, northeast of Tampa. At least you have nice weather year round for “the wind in your hair and bugs in your teeth”!

  • The oil cooler on an air cooled VW Type I engine is in the same place on all of the displacement sizes, 1200-1600 cc.
The only other solution is an aftermarket remote oil cooler. This would require at least threading the block where the oil cooler mounts with two NPT pipe thread holes. You then should use a pair of fabricated braided stainless…[Read more]

  • Bailey, I replied to your msg..I think..(not very good at the computer just yet).. anyway, if you didn’t get it send me another and we’ll go again. M Watson

  • Hey Bailey, I have two MGs for sale if you haven’t bought one yet.. I’m south of Atlanta off I-85.. both are runners and have current tags.. one is green and the other is yellow..both have tan interiors.  Give me a call  706-637-5007 or 706-402-5007.  M Watson

  • hey bailey and paul, i have a mgtd kitcar for sale and i am in north ga. maybe the one your looking for.

  • Hi, thanks for the response.  Only #3 lost compression.  the local VW guy said it was probably from poor cooling of # 3 which was a problem on the 1500.  the car actually ran 6 miles home and just blew smoke.  It is presently very cold here, as soon as I get a mild day, I will pull the head.  Will check out Samba.  thanks Dennis

  • I think anything you do will need a certain amount of fabrication.I can”t see the ranger trans taking up more room than the pinto C4.The biggest thing is going to be getting all the electronics that control the engine systems figured out. There are places that make the harnesses and ECM”s needed to make the ranger engine useable in other…[Read more]
