Tom, yes I have used sail repair tape on my 30 ft sailboat, works well for the last 10 + years. You need to be sure the underside of the top is super clean of dust, lint, dirt etc. you also can purchase from “Sailrite ” their single needle stitch awl. I have used that on my top, and Bimini Cockpit cover for the boat. Private Message me with your…[Read more]

Thanks John, yeah I was wondering where a U-joint might be if there was one. I’m going to read through all that.
I had used the YouTube video already, which is why I thought I could do that easily enough. There’s another showing a large wrench cinching up the tightness at the shaft end of the box, but I think it was a different model year version of… -

Ah, okay, I thought that must be what you meant. That’s how I’m driving mine now, just folding back the driver side of the tonneau cover and tucking it behind the seat.
Yeah, the fun factor hasn’t stopped yet for me these past 10 months. Probably partly due to not driving the car much but it’s so different anyway and I always wanted this style of… -

I’m no mechanic, although sometimes I pretend to be one in my garage until I really mess things up. Regardless, I got interested in your problem and according to my own inexpert research, the most likely culprit is a bad U-joint in the steering box. See http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=493919
This seems to make sense since your co… -

Early FiberFabs with the exposed steering shaft don’t have any identifying marks, AFAIK. It must be the later MiGi II that has the FF molded in…

And here’s the whole video I put together, just showing the steering parts moving before and after adjustment. Steering wheel play is afterward, almost same as before or maybe going from 3 inches play to 2 inches. I didn’t actually measure.
Misaligned(?) shaft/rod is at time 1:11 in this video. -

My FiberFab has a big “FF” logo molded into the cowl under the hood. That and finding a copy of a receipt from FiberFab under the seat made mine easy to identify. Failing that … you have to post pictures.

I used a tape that was somewhat clear and really tough with a very sticky adhesive to repair an awning on a camper I had. It worked so well, I never did replace the awning. The tape you are describing sounds like the same thing I used.
If the top material is still sound, it should work just fine for a temporary fix. The appearance will not be… -

Welcome to our group!
You have a very nice car!
About driving in the cold… I live in central Illinois, so our weather is about the same…Being an old motorcycle addict, I just get out the old leather jacket, hoodie, riding gloves, goggles and hat.As long as it’s sunny and dry I hit the road.Warning…you’ll get some WEIRD looks! Thanks all.
@ LRH – I was critiquing the tear in the roof today and moving around the ribs (that’s the reason why the top looks wonky in a few of the pictures). Put a few stitches in it to test how strong the canvas was in general and it unfortunately is not. I’m looking at a “marine application-type” tape (think sail repair or bimini top r… -
