Thanks guys for the tips and info.I did not realize that most of these kits have the hole in the rear cover. My thoughts were that when on display at shows this is going to look terible.I will however figure a way to cover the hole and still have venting for the engine. My plans are to have the spare fold away and hinge the cover to the body.I h…[Read more]

Geoff,I’ll jump in with the easy stuff first.Clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, cracked or wet distibutor cap,bad wires, causing spark to jump.Ignition control module going bad.And lastley timing belt jumped a tooth.Hope it gets you back home,my guess would be the timing belt.

Rich,Thanks for the info.I had been looking at all the posted photo’s,but nothing showed detail of the rear cover. There may have been a mix up when crated back in 85,as the cover for the most part does not clear the fan shroud or the carb on the VW engine. All parts as far as I know are original to this kit,It was purchased origanaly in 85,all the…[Read more]

Thanks for the positive comment.I though long and hard about this modification.I had considered painting the area a matte black, but I felt it would still stand out.I guess being on lay-off and bored to death helped to make the choice. Also this body has sat for so long that there was a bow in that area that I could not get to lay flat.I also…[Read more]

Scott A Chynoweth replied to the topic DOA – Jumped Time? in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 16 years ago
My 2 cents says it’s the timming belt. They don’t jump persay. What generally happens is a few teeth on the belt break off and boom jumped timming.Routine maintenance on the belt drive motors is 30,000-50,000 miles. Most people will generally wait till the belt fails, but then there is usually more damage at that point. My advise if it is the…[Read more]

Scott A Chynoweth replied to the topic rear track width in the forum VW Based Kits 16 years ago
Paul; Thanks, that should help out alot, assuming yours is a standard.I was finding the measurment to be 53.1-53.2 for track on a standard. My thinking is that an inside measurement to the backing plates would prove more usefull. So now I have 2 options, different backspacing on the rear wheels to tuck the tire inside the fender line,or make the rear f…[Read more]

Been there done that.most measurments I have found give a track width, but do not specify where it is measured. With 10 vw based mg owners on here, and most likey on a standard pan,is it that hard to measure?I know I have dared to be different.I was informed I couldn’t use a super pan.Well I was able to convert one,and it worked out…[Read more]

Dick; did you check the bushings on the control arms upper and lower.also I think there may me a stabalizer rod on the lower control arm check the bushings in those.Worn ball joints as well as a loose wheel bearing will cause problems.Check sway bar bushings as well if it has one.Uneven tire pressure on the front will cause issues with pulling as…[Read more]

I went with a 85 chrysler 5th ave, same as the volare, aspen.Has the L shaped tortion bars contained in the K frame, as chrysler calls it.This was about the cleanest conversion over the nova camaro sub frames as most I have looked at look sloppy as they lay the truck frame over the camaro sub frame and weld it up.The chrysler makes it look like it…[Read more]

Well as of this weekend I have acumulated the basic parts I needed.Pan, Ball joint front beam, motor, tranny.I have even gone so far as to cut the super front end off the pan,and have fabed up a mounting plate for the front beam,I will be able to bolt the front end up and be able to shim as needed just like the original. For me this was an easier…[Read more]

The transmission bolt patterns should be the same.I do not recall if the type 4 is the same width. It is however abit deeper than a type 1 due to different air cooling shroud on the front of the motor verses the type 1 being on top.I would measure the two motors and check your clearance front to back/side to side.May require some modificaction the…[Read more]

Updated;I have aquired a vw donor.Unfortunatly it is a super beetle, strut front end.But it is FREE.I see by the manuals there was a conversion plate, any body have one they no longer need? I know my other option is to cut what I need from a standard and graft to the pan.

Paul thanks for the input.I know about the strut fronts on the super beetles, had a 73 for a trike donor.I did not know about the ghias being wider. Most likley the floor pans would be shot? could these be replaced with bug floor pans to narrow the ghia pan? Also,I just came across a 68 bug pan.Has new floors been blasted and painted.with a motor, guy…[Read more]
