Blue painter’s tape comes in different widths. The grip isn’t as tenacious as that of masking tape and doesn’t leave a residue. It pulls off with a clean edge. Applying it might not be so bad if you press down the middle of the tape along the welting and then use a thin piece of plastic to tuck in the edges.

Several members have referred to front engine kit frames as having been assembled by a welder who had been paid by the pound. All that 4 x 6 tubing is strong but heavy.Has anyone welded up a frame that is stressed for TDr loads? Clearly the side rails on this tube frame Miata wouldn’t work, but the components and size are there. On the ot… -

Vincec,
Having the horn go off at a lunch stop is better than in traffic. You have either a frayed wire that is now completing the horn circuit or a stuck horn button. It’s hard to ground a circuit on a fiberglass car. I’m betting on the horn button. Disconnect the wires from the button, reconnect the horn and touch the button wires t… -

Beware of using RedneckTorque. That’s where you crank down until the bolt breaks and then back off a quarter turn. -

My 87 Avanti came with wire wheels from the factory. The local Jaguar dealer was the only shop in town that could true and balance wires. The original owner asked the factory to swap them out for solid wheels in 1990 when last wire wheel tech in Atlanta retired.

A hot rod shop. Who’d have thunk it. I rummaged through my catalogs and found an old Speedway catalog. It’s an education.
How about a 4 bar kit in stainless for $299.95 -

Mustang II front and back. Good to know.
That simplifies speedometer calibration too.I assume that the Mustang II doesn’t use a multilink suspension with a Panhard rod. Where does that come from? A custom Rod Shop job sounds like it would cost as much as the rest of the car. -

It’s good to know that Fatman can narrow the front end crossmember.
Has anyone identified a rear end that can handle more torque than a Chevette or Pinto differential. I’m not looking for a narrowed Ford 9″.Does it still use half leaf springs or is there something more sophisticated? -

It worked for me. Did you delete the quote signs?
It is a list of all the eBay ads for Mustang II front ends by multiple vendors.Good pictures. Many different models.Which one fits a front engine TDr chassis? -

Do you still have a soft pedal? If so there is still air in the system.Bubbles could be your problem. When you fill a dry system, you wind up with tiny bubbles on the walls of the hoses and tubes much like those on the side of a bottle of soda. They collect in the corners where hoses, tubes and cylinders connect too. With time and use t… -

Buy a copy of “The Volksewagen for the Compleat Idiot” by John Muir.
Then buy the shop manual for your chassis/engine. -

Back in the day we found a slightly more legal way to prove who’s car was fastest. We lined up one behind the other. The passenger in the front car was the starter. If the car in front could pull away it was the fastest. If it couldn’t shake the car behind it you switched places and did it again. If the constabulary noticed you at least one of y…[Read more]

Peter C. King replied to the topic Ideal thermostat temperature? in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 11 years ago
If you’re going to pull the thermostat you might as well install a new one. They are a wear item and don’t last forever.
Running an engine too cool is not good for it. The extra gas from the enrichment circuit washes oil from the cylinder walls and contaminates the oil in the pan. Increased cylinder wear, thinner oil and lower mileage will cost… -
Peter C. King replied to the topic Ideal thermostat temperature? in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 11 years ago
Dave,OK, the gauge is working.I’d bet that there isn’t a thermostat in the system.Have you been tracking your gas mileage? It will go up once the correct thermostat is controlling the temp and the enrichment circuit is turned off. The heater will work better too. Just in time for Fall cruising with the top down.Peter -
Peter C. King replied to the topic Ideal thermostat temperature? in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 11 years ago
Are you sure that the temp gauge is accurate? Is it connected to the sending unit? Is the sending unit in the engine? It’s hard to believe that an engine could run that cool. You could be up to the correct temperature. I would start with the gauge and sending unit first.
How hot is your heater? If it’s cooking look at the temp gauge/sending… -

Your VW based TDr should be a marvelous snow car, unlike the originals.Take pictures. -

Peter C. King replied to the topic trunk space in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 11 years ago
Early Corvette convertibles didn’t have a trunk lid. Instead there was a trap door behind the seats that gave access to what would have been trunk space. Can that be done on a front engine TDr?

Ed,
I could torque the CV joints back in the day by jacking up the car. That allowed the axle to drop enough to allow me to torque the top bolt on the inboard CV joint. I rotated the wheel to put each bolt at the top in succession. Keeping the wheel from rotating while I torqued the bolts required a lot of up and down if I used the parking brak… - Load More
