Try removing the belt and turning the alternator by hand. It should turn smoothly. If its hard to move or has a flat spot it’s time for a new one. Remans are cheap. Pay attention to proper belt tension on the next one.

Early Porsche 912’s used the 356C drivetrain.
Later models used the VW Type IV that was installed in the VW 411, Van and Porsche 914.Could the seller have a Type IV? -

Dick,Have you adjusted the brakes? They are not self adjusting even though the Chevette manual says that they are. Nobody backs up enough to make that feature work. The first sign that the brakes are wearing is the pedal dropping.Adjust, bleed, then see how high the pedal is. You might be pleasantly surprised.BDriver -

Have you bled the brakes lately? Air in the system will increase pedal travel as you compress the air. It doesn’t take much. Is the color of your brake fluid clear or murky brown. It isn’t the latter you have water in the fluid. Flush the system and start over with new fluid.

The Top-Snapper arrived. The directions show you how to open and close snaps from inside and outside. The designer thought about the problems this tool solves. There is a thin part of the blade that will catch the inside of a snap and enable you to pull it closed from inside the car.
The instructions are in two languages. The second is French. -

Dick,
A good parts shop should be able to cross reference the shocks.MacPherson struts are one piece units. You change the spring, shock and upper control arm together. Compressing the spring is scary. That’s not a coil over shock. On coil overs the shock absorbers are separate from the springs. The car sits on the springs while the shock… -

Ed,You’ve been running the engine with not much water in parts of it. Heat is hard on oil. Have you considered changing it before you run down the road?Bleeder valves at the high spots may sound Rube Goldberg. But you’ve engineered a cooling system in a chassis that wasn’t designed for one. You have high spots with air in them that the wa… -

Ed,You engineered a liquid cooling system into an air cooled car. That is quite an achievement. So it has a few air locks in it. They are not hard stops. You are almost there.Congratulations,BDriverP.S. Be careful of which epoxy you use. Most soften at 140 degrees. There are high temp products. Look at Liquid Metal. -

Ed,It sounds as if you still have air in the system. The trick is to bleed it. You may wind up with a bleed valve at the high point once you figure out where that is.Air expands as it warms up. Water/antifreeze does not expand as much. As the engine begins to warm the air pushes water out of the overflow and sucks water back in as it c… - Load More
