Has anyone engineered a roll bar that mirrors the highest top bow?

You do have a steering damper installed, don’t you? Is there a flat spot when you change direction? There should be no change in resistance.

While you are evaluating your frame options, don’t forget the TDReplica.com grill badge. It’s a beauty. Available in the “Our Store” link on the left side of the screen. -

Will an IRS, disk brake chassis fit under a TD replica? That would be a sweet ride. Add sway bars and you’d be giving the Porsche replica guys fits in the twisty bits.
The VW automatic is another issue. It didn’t sell well, probably because it turned an adequate engine into a marginal one. The uneven gear selection in the manual gearbox makes 50…[Read more] -

Aah. That’s the lightweight competition option. Once thought very rare, it has become more common with time.
The VW slushbox is rare.
This isn’t a frameoff restoration. This is a frameless restoration.
Is that a swing axle suspension? That’s lot of rust. This would be a really good time to make some big decisions about what you want to ride on…[Read more] -

Your car is a replica of a MG TD. It was preceded by the MG TC and followed by the MG TF, the MGA and the MGB. There were a number of models after that. Your car is a TD replica, not a B replica.
There are several good books on the history of MG on Amazon. -

Where is your module mounted? They have to be remote from the engine. They are an integrated circuit that is very heat sensitive. Cross a given temp and the are toast.
Try relocating the module. If it’s on the block, you have your answer. -

This gives whole new meaning to the term “frameoff restoration”.
Most cars need a hydraulic lift to remove the body. A TD Replica needs 2x4s and 6 big guys, plus a case of beer and a couple of pizzas.

Ed,
Is the carrier bearing you are referring to a rubber block with a bolt through it under the rear end of the transmission? That’s a transmission mount. They wear out over time. Available at Pep Boys. Could that noise be the bottoming out you referred to?
Don’t confuse springs with shocks. Springs hold the car up. Shocks dampen rebound. Wi…[Read more] -

The downside to a boat tank is that they have no impact or penetration resistance. Not good in an accident, or when the lawyers learn that you didn’t have a tank designed for a car, assuming that you survived the blaze. -
Peter C. King replied to the topic Need fuel tank in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 10 months ago
There are a number of sources of replacement tanks in the hot rod and replica markets. They can build a custom tank for big bucks or you can select from their selection of stock tanks. this manufacturer has a number of 11 gallon tanks in aluminum and steel that measure 12 x 12 x 18.
This one costs…[Read more] -

The B-18b was also installed in the PV544-B18 Sport and the 122S. Both were early 4 seat sports sedans and surprised many a pure sports car of the era.

Let’s hope that the oaks stay away from the garage your TD lives in.

I’ve been a microcar fan for years. One statistic about cars like Isettas is that they fare better in accidents than you would expect. It appears that their light weight allows them to bounce away from an impact while a heavier car would stay involved. Small, light cars also duck better. The TD is not as exposed as you might think.
The lack of a…[Read more] -

Peter C. King replied to the topic Bumper Question in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 10 months ago
Is there a temper issue here? The back bar might be springier than flat bar stock. Could someone with a backbar out of the car suspend the ends and measure it under a specific load? i.e. load it until it defelcts 1″? That would tell us if bar stock would work.

Peter C. King replied to the topic Fuel Line in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 10 months ago
Even hard copper is a relatively soft metal. The pan is steel. It will rub a hole in copper over time. That’s why fuel line is either hard steel or braided stainless steel. The braided line carries a warning about abrasion. Think about replacing what you have with steel. The bender isn’t expensive. Harbor Freight carries it. Line is available by…[Read more]

It sounds as if you have two lists to work on. One, is the set of tasks you need to complete to put the car on the road. Being able to drive is a big motivator. The second is the group of projects to make it pretty.
Road list: Mount hood, engine cover and seats, buy/install seat belts. install the bumpers as is. There’s not a lot of cashflow in…[Read more] - Load More
