OK, just sent an email to who I hope is the appropriate authority, Howard Duncan. I expect he’ll settle this matter officially. Here’s what I wrote:hduncan@scca.orgOK. Mr. Duncan: here’s a question you’ve probably not fielded yet:
I and a few buds run ancient fiberglass copies of the MG TD. Most of us
are in VW Bug-based death traps with stock or…[Read more] -

Well, both the VW Beetle (and New Beetle, 1.8 Turbo), and the MG T series are categorized as HS in this class listing.Since my car is about 60 percent 1969 Beetle (and 15 percent ’67 Beetle) by weight, with another two percent or so MG T series, and is not substantially modified from its stock configuration, I would argue the thing be slotted in…[Read more]

I ran a charity event with a Porsche club. All the Porches were classed and all others were “E” for “everything else”. Besides my MG, was a Z06 Vette, STI’s, EVO’s, and a Spyker. All in the same class. That was the day of the rain.(consult your 2012 calendar)

All I can say is it looks intact. Should be no major surprises. BUT I’m not a VW guy.

Ed, you’d have to consult the current rule book. I’ve been running in E-mod for a long time. Don’t know the specifics anymore. I believe you can download it through scca.org

My lap belts are bolted to the tunnel and a ridge in the metal floor pan. Threaded holes–possibly originally for the VW back seat belts? Maybe a little better than just through fiberglass but Paul’s analysis applies to all of these cars. Don’t crash.Mine are really old, maybe original to the build. I might splurge on new ones, maybe upgrade to…[Read more]

Correct me if I am wrong, Bill, but I think the SCCA letter class system is based (in part, at least) on engine displacement. E being something like 2.5 liters and under? I know that’s how it used to be.Stock, mod, etc are then based on how far you’ve strayed from what the factory supplied. So we’d all be “mod” because we’re not Pinots, Chevettes,…[Read more]

You’ve piqued my curiosity. What would you be doing in “Mankato, MN”? I’ve been there. lots of family in the area.

Because it is a kit car it falls into a Mod(Modified) class. They place me in E-Mod because it is based on an actual production car. For Autocross a roll bar or cage is not required. All you need is a lap belt , a helmet and a desire to drive. They will subject the car to a tech inspection. They make sure the wheel bearing aren’t loose, the tires…[Read more]

Did they run that car regularly–or at least spin the engine? If not, your valve springs are going to be like your torsion bars–only more likely to fail once you start running it. Several valve springs have likely been compressed for decades, while others have been uncompressed. The ones that were compressed will be weak.

This was the car stored on the lift for 20 years, right? That might have something to do with the ride height?

If you can locate wiper arms as in Ed’s picture, the ends where the blade attaches is indexed.(movable). This will eliminate the chore of having to bend them.
