edward ericson replied to the topic Volts meter reads low? in the forum VW Based Kits 14 years, 6 months ago
Thanks, Mark. I’ll do the alternator when/if I get into the engine. It’s $200 beyond the already ridiculously overstretched budget I allotted for this project. Besides, the thing works. I never had to charge the battery or nothing last year, even when using the headlights and CD player! At the same time!Right on re the ‘use another voltmeter’…[Read more]

Put a charged battery in; readings are about the same–11 volts at rest and 12 when running. Think the meter is about 1.2 volts off.

Thanks, guys. It’s a generator. Never “flashed” it; it’s been connected since I got it, and probably for 30 years prior. Brushes good, battery has been living nice for a year and a half, so I assume it’s been charging.I’m thinking the meter ought to read 12 or 12.5 on the battery alone when i turn the key on–before the generator starts turning.…[Read more]

Here’s a little inspiration. This is the nicest V8 TD I’ve yet seen. Could a V12 Jag even fit in there? Post some photos when you get going with ‘er.

Rust-schmust! These cars are fiberglass.
I like the color and the interior pattern on that car. Think you can save that?I also like the offset in the running board for the rear torsion cap. Does that allow the cap to be removed–and the bars adjusted–without taking the body off the frame as is required on my car?Good luck with your resto. We’ll…[Read more]

That’s good info Charlie. I hadn’t known about the Bus speedo–thought it’s be way shorter ’cause of how they’re built.

Mricio, isn’t this fun?Blinkers and indicators are working . . . now. But:I’ve got a high beam indicator that works until you put the headlights on, then it indicates highs when the lows are on. And when the indicator is on, the instrument lights go off! Ratsa-fratsa GROUNDS!Also found a wire that had burned/melted to the next one. Probably circa…[Read more]

The adaptors will add 3/4 inch to your track, more or less, each side. And what is the offset on the wires? Might add more width still. Instead of adaptors, you might consider having your hubs drilled to the desired bolt pattern. The Speedster guys have this done all the time & say it’s $100. I don’t know if that’s for one or for four, but…[Read more]

dbrock, you might want to post your car’s pictures at Forgotten Fiberglass, or at least let that guy know about it.http://www.forgottenfiberglass.com/You might not rate (might not be old enough) but who knows?

Brilliant. If you built it already you should have a lot of fun with the resto. Some of us can blame the PO (previous owner) for all our troubles, which in my case is really funny, given the general quality of my own attempts at repair.

Re wiper motors: Check this out:This one is the right shape. $70. 110-degree sweep. Paint it crinkle black and you’re 99 percent home. This one is like half that. There’s a black crinkle finish one somewhere too. waterproof, brass and stainless, 110 degree sweep. $70-80. Not a “genuine Lucas” Chinese reproduction (they’re actually under $300 at…[Read more]

Love to see the photos of this. I took all the small leaves out of my front beam–six upper and six lower. Still not sure if I will have to put some back. I set the front end at the height it was before the new beam, which turns out to be a couple inches lower than stock, and I can still adjust it up or down, so the spring rate is probably pretty…[Read more]

What th..! That blue . . . engine?Looks like a garage full of MGs, this one with a proper absurdly-foldable MG style bonnet. But for the life of me I can’t make out what that is supposed to be under it.I see the Pinto shifter. Is the engine maybe a V-6?

Leave them alone for now. Tape them up. Fix all the grounds first. THEN see if there’s something that still doesn’t work.Trying to find a “use” or purpose for all the loose wires on a zillion-year-old car that someone else adapted wiring to is a fool’s errand.
