  If you used lead pigs ? from a metal scrap yard smaller with more weight for the size and may be easier to adjust in a position you need just a thought ,,,  Dan

When i first got mine i had a similar problem after removing the wipers and all the linkage and motor  and cleaning it  all they have worked fine 4 years now like yours mine sat for 20 some years i also keep rain x in the car just in-case Dan

 A little late but,, Morris Minor, MGA ,Triumph and others used a lucus # L549 plastic light lens that will screw to the ‘LUCKY’ light base that seem to be used on most kits other than VW  they were an exact fit on my car  And you can find them made of Glass !  Dan

Montie ,it has been a long time ago but i do not remember any trouble or springs ,just a plastic thing in the shifter and it all stayed together and I changed the handle. Dan
