Shu, I’m so close to being done that I’m going to move forward with the automatic. However, I’ve already started thinking about making the switch to a manual next winter. I have the clutch cable tube so it’s ready to go when I catch my breath and save my pennies.Almost there!!

I know I’ve been quite for a while but I’ve been working on a bunch of little things in prep for the start of final assembly. One item I’ve been working on is trying to get the transmission to go in reverse. But I have not been successful. Remember, I have an automatic so doing research trying to troubleshoot the problem has been time co…[Read more]

Rick replied to the topic Engine won't turn off in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 2 months ago
I work from home on Fridays so I stepped into the garage over lunch to take a slower, closer look at things. And sure enough, (DOH!) I had a hot wire running to the coil fuse. Stupid mistake but got it fixed.Started and shut if off several times and everything is working fine. Thanks for the sanity check.

Well it aint pretty and I have a few issues (no reverse, weak brakes, engine will not shut off when I turn off the ignition) but we had our maiden voyage today. Granted it was only 20 feet but it ran on its own power! Here’s the short video (couldn’t figure out how to upload the video)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5-UQZZX6qc&feature=youtu.beNow…[Read more]

My son finished the gas tank! We’ve already had an issue with the fuel supply tube breaking but we have a solution that will keep him from having to open it back up. Frustrating but fixable.I’m not quite ready to anchor it in place but I did a test fit and it’s perfect. Here are the pics. What a talented kid.

Rick replied to the topic What's the Ball Joint Removal Trick in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 3 months ago
Allen, I know mine sat for quite some time before I got to them but I finally had to take them to a mechanic who used the hydrolic machine to finally break them apart. By that point I had beat them so much and so hard I couldn’t lift the hammer any more.

My son and I started doing body work last
weekend to prep for our paint job.Probably one of the least favorite things
I’ve done so far. Partly because, since my son does this kind of thing as
part of his work he is as obsessive about it as I have been about other
things. I think it’s good enough and he tells me to get back to wo…[Read more] -

Rick replied to the topic rear wheel bearing in the forum General Discussion 12 years, 4 months ago
Greg,Here is a link to an IRS diagram that might be helpful. http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/0.suspension_rear.irs.htmYou want to make sure it’s not your CV joint. If it’s the outer bearing it is pretty simple to replace if you have basic mechanical skills and tools.Good luck and wear latex gloves.
