ok so I have a mgtdr vw chasis. Pulled the shift rod out to replace bushing and coupler.
How in the world do I get the shaft back in there far enough to reach it thru shifter hole to use needle nose to feed thru bushing since it’s only like 2.5 ft long?????

Looks like my steering wheel. My rivets are recessed a bit too, but have never bothered me. The rivets don’t look like they unscrew from the back. You might be able to sand the front side down to rivet depth, but could do more damage than good.

Been a while since I updated the Spyder project here. We had a setback involving the front suspension, the fixing of which may be relevant to owners of VW-based TDrs.
Short story: the inner bushings were mostly missing from my torsion beam.
Completely rebuilt it with Delrin bushings.
Since then I’ve put about 60 miles on the car in testing,…[Read more]

Michael
Pictures to go along with your narrative will help us understand the problem you have encountered. Also pics of the steering wheel where the plugs are missing and where the plugs are in place -

Thanks, Paul for the manual add…and thank you to the folks who’ve posted over the years, learned lots. Of the things I can’t easily find, I’m refinishing the steering wheel and the top side rivet holes are all…empty? Seems like there should have been a plug there to cover up the rivets but everything I seem to find is flush rivets. It’s a…[Read more]

I had the same problem. I cut off the turn signal arm and drilled hole and threaded. Took a length of 1/8″ threaded rod and bent to desired shape, covered it with a piece of fuel line and added a knob. A bolt at connection point locks it in place so it won’t turn.

The turn signal switch I got has a larger offset than the original resulting in no clearance between the the lever and the wheel. Does anyone have a work aroun to get more clearance. Switch and column are supposedly out of a 1966 beetle.
thanks…

Larry Jackson replied to the topic Question about VW suspension in the forum VW Based Kits 4 years, 8 months ago
I have decided that the front suspension will be fine as it is. On the rear I had to remove all of the body bolts from the pan and lift the body about three inches to allow the removal of the plate that holds the torsion arm. Once this was done I was able to pull the torsion arms and re-index the splines on the torsion bars to get the proper ride height.

One more thing I forgot to mention— the tires are designed for sidecar motorcycles, so they have a flatter tread profile like a car tire, they are not designed for banking turns like many bike tires.

So I’ve been moving ahead with research for tires for the Ford wheels as I complete the major body work/gas tank project. With the fenders that I have, my best bet for tires would be the 400-19 size. They are just a little bigger than the radials I have on there now, and the low profile should give the car a great 1920’s racer look— exactly what…[Read more]

For the spoke, I would choose the two part epoxy as Gorilla Glue tends to expand as it cures. Probably not an issue for something like this, but I find epoxy easier to work with.
