I have to antique plated cars in PA, Montse and a 1988 560SL. The PA rules are that they can only be driven for a maximum of 5000 miles a year to an from car club events and an occasional drive. I occasionally use both cars to drive to work.

Thanks, guys. I suspect I’ll be in no trouble whatsoever if I continue as I have with the occasional nice-day drive to and from work. On the way in this a.m., the truck in front of me, mid 1990s GMC Step-sider with two pitbull bumper stickers (“a member of my family” and “Ban stupid people, not dogs”), sported a historic tag.
That’s the guy…[Read more]

I think the seat racks have to be ground off regardless on all the kits. Just get a cutoff wheel & it shouldn’t take but a few minutes, half-hour…

Never have been bothered in VA – only rear tag mounted as well (VA requires two).
Have the pay one time 59.00 for the life of the car and no inspections. Most Police just wave – it’s a hobby car.
Time to move to a less restrictive state – Most likely my next move will be Texas – Va is starting to creep toward Md.
Don’t need that…

Well if you’re pulled over on your way to work just tell him you’re unemployed and are heading to a job interview.

And that’s how it goes, Scott. Welcome to the forum.
A couple guys here have put in new floors. There are also “frame stiffeners” for VW pans for sale. I’m thinking of getting a set. One guy has installed them (I think) on his kit. They’re spendy but an easier install than these convertible rails, which require a body jig and welding.

I second Kent’s shifter diagnosis. If you’ve never replaced a shift rod bushing, we’ll describe the fun & try to help.
The squirrelly front end might be any of the various bushings, ball joints and steering knuckles. Could be the dampener too. Check all that if you haven’t yet. But often that feeling is gotten because:
- the tires are old;
- the…

So came home (from work, in Bridget) to this notice from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration:
Important information about Maryland registered historic vehiclesDear Historic Vehicle Owner,

First, Welcome!! You’ve come to the right place to find help.
Second, I’m of little help to you. As mine is not VW based, you’ll have to wait for those boys to wake up. The door issue, maybe. If the hinges are sloppy, where you can wiggle the door up and down when the door is open, replace them. From your description, that might be the case. I…[Read more]

That would be great, Bill! Depending on where they are the 5:00 thing shouldn’t be a problem. Please, forward the info on so they can have it if they want to do it. Getting better by the minute!

We might have a fifth. I’ve been in touch with Donna (She and Matt showed up briefly at Carlisle two years ago with a red and black TDr.)
She says she’s off Saturday but has 5:00 plans. I said it won’t be a problem. I hope she says yes.

Rain was just taken out of the forecast – lets keep it that way.
Looking forward to it

Here’s a map with the complete route for next Saturday’s cruise. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/1264290082. Charlene and I just got back from doing a final run on the route and it was perfect day for it.
The total loop is 82.86 miles. Photo stops, the breakfast stop at the Goose Creek Grill and the lunch stop at the Whip Tavern are mar…[Read more]

I’ve said this before but it was a while ago, so I’ll repeat: The TDr is cooler than the Cobra replica and the Speedster replica. It’s not only rarer—a plus at any car show or on the boulevard—it’s also more pedestrian. It’s a $5,000 copy of a $15,000 car. That makes it cooler because it’s not at all about status (which, let’s be real, both the…[Read more]

One of the reasons that I didn’t get antique tags for mine. In Tennessee, they’re only supposed to be driven to shows or for pleasure cruises on weekends, though you can take them to a repair shop or test drive after a repair during the week. Not sure how much they enforce them, but normal daily driver uses are pretty much prohibited….
