Speaking of welding aluminum, I saw the chief bodyman from Ferrari weld together two pieces of aluminum foil. This was at the Illinois state fair many years ago. I still haven’t seen anything like that since. Wonder if he could weld fiberglas?

Congratulations! By the way, my problem turned out to be a new valve guide that had been underreamed. The man who did them for me loosened it up and it has run like a champ ever since.

One small correction to the original article. The cars weren’t built for sale, but were built for the personal use of the Shriners. I managed to meet with one of the only surviving builders a year ago and got the history. You should see his. They had access to a foundry at work and he cast all of the parts for his car in brass. They used orig…[Read more]

Correct, I have one of the five front engined version. There was a total of five VW based cars built also, for a total of 10. The front engined versions had opening hoods like the real TDs’ All of the front engined versions had Ford Pinto running gear, some with 2.3s although mine, being the first completed has the 2.0. As stated above, the…[Read more]

My wife washed my migi with a very harsh spray, and absolutely removed all shine, which was already minimal. I’ve tried wax, polishing compound and several other things. In desperation, I tried Meguires Plastix, a product used for convertable top windows. Mellow Yellow now has the best looking finish that it has had since I bought it! Don…[Read more]

I was lucky enough to race a 289 slab sided Cobra back in the 60’s. Wish it had been my car, but it belonged to a club that I belonged to.

Great to hear that your situation has improved.. I had a knee replacement, so I’m not at Carlisle this year but hopefully I’ll get to meet you there next year with both our cars and situations much improved.

I have both, and enjoy both! The Ford engined version feels more substantial, rides better and is more pleasant to drive long distances. The Vw is zippier (not faster), gives you more of a 50’s feeling and has more storage and footroom. They BOTH ride better, handle better, squeek and rattle less and are faster. The Vw is easier, if not a li…[Read more]

I’m 68 & 11/12 ths. and am currently recovering from a total knee replacement (2 wks ago), but I have two cars-“Mellow-Yellow” a Fiberfab V-Dub, 1600 dp. and the “Cardinal, front enigined Ford 2000. According to my convoluted math that only makes me 29 &11/24 per car. And that isn’t counting my 46 Chev pickup (work in progress), 68 Chevy Impa…[Read more]

The Cardinal, “miss June” is one of 10 hand built by the Kyana Shriners (5 front engine, 5 Vw based) in the early 1980’s using molds made from a real TD (fenders widened) It currently has a 2000cc Pinto engine and auto trans. A 2300-8 plug is slated to go in this winter. The picture was taken in my backyard in Bardstown Ky. The boxer look…[Read more]

I used a Honda motorcycle mirror on mine. I made a simple bracket that mounts to the slot in the fold down windshield. I used a 1″ x 1″ piece of L shaped aluminum about 2″ long, drilled two holes for mounting. I think you can see it on the calendar shot.
