  •  Paul,   I had not noticed that the license tag on the originals was vertical and have been trying to keep the one on my BCW positioned at the same angle as the ”gas tank”. I’m headed to the garage to make adjustments. The old saying ”It’s want you learn after you know it all” applies here. Thanks for pointing it out.

Have you checked to see if you are getting gas to the carburator? When it’s pulling it’s hissy, disconnect the fuel line from the carb , crank the engine and see if gas is being pumped to the carb. The problem could be a bad filter ,bad fuel pump or stopped up gas line. I think you said you were a new owner, If the car set up for an extended…[Read more]

  •  Look in  stickney’s photo gallery to see an example of the 2’nd type Paul described . Looks really good . I think it is made of aluminum that has been polished or perhaps stainless. Great attention to detail.

  •  Dan,  I checked my Haynes manual. It says to turn the switch to the ”off” position and pull the lever out. I can see that will not work since your’s is broke off ,I am assuming flush with the piece it fits in to.. My CHEVETTE manual shows several diagrams all of them show the lever already removed.
Try to move it by inserting a icepick in th…[Read more]

  •  Charlie, I just looked in the download manuals section . The MIGI manual describes the brackets and shows a drawing on page 119.
The CMC manual shows a different style bracket that may be easier to fabricate on page 19. It appears that these brackets are made of angle iron and may be the stronger of the two designs.
Check them out ,meanwhile so…[Read more]

  •  Charlie,VW brackets will not work, not even close. The brackets are made using 1 1/2 ” by 3/8 flat iron [one and one half by three eights].Look in Washington Will’s and Wolf pow’s gallery and you can see the front part of the brackets and how they attach to the rear of the VW pan. While the brackets are made of flat iron I don’t know how you…[Read more]

  •  Charlie,It’s like a whole new world! If you click on a picture ,then drag it to the right and then down ,you can make most of them full screen, also zoom in to make them even larger. It ‘s a great way to see how something looks before you actually do it. Also makes it easier to compare the different kits as each brand has their good points , not s…[Read more]

  •  I have a factory built London Roadster TD replica that as far as I can determine uses the same body as the Daytona MIGI. I replaced the  top with one that fits an original MG with a two bow top. In order to make it work, I had to cut 2” off each end of the rear top bow.If I had not shortened the bow the top would not have been long enough to r…[Read more]

  •  Roll up to the top of this or any other page[post] ,you will see two rows of buttons[they may be called icons] and the photo gallery is the last one on the second row, Click on it and a list will come up, schroll down the list  to my name or whoever else you want to see and click on it . You will see more TD replicas in one place than anywhere i…[Read more]

  •  Montie, Did the gasket problem begin after you changed to a non-vented  cap? If it occurs only with the non-vented cap, it sounds like either pressure or vacumn build up in the engine, perhaps blowing the gasket . I should say I have no experience with this  particular engine, but had a simular problem with a 6 cyl. Chev. when I replaced a ve…[Read more]

  •  Check the last picture in my photo gallery . It shows a car with the engine and body in the same positions as yours ,also a smaller air cleaner that may work for you.I tried to post it here but missed three times and gave up. Larry Murphy40348.703287037

  •  Last night while surfing I found a you tube vidieo of a Duchess with about a two second shot of the horizontal wind wing mounts you described. They must be very rare but at least we know they did exist.
I have also seen non-adjustable wind wing mounts made of alluminum flat stock  1/8 x 1/2 inch cut into 3 1/2 inch lengths and bent to the de…[Read more]

  •  Charlie, I think the doors would be the place to start, If they fit the openings when you hold them in the proper position against the rear door jams, then the body is most likely mounted in the proper position on the VW pan.. If the doors fit ,then mount the bumper brackets and see if the splash pan clears the muffler with enough space to…[Read more]

  •  Charlie,You are making good progress, this is just a small bump in the road.
Your car looks very much like the Fiber-Fab/ CMC kits though I’m glad that Paul did the research on Design Classics ,that was a company that I had not known about. I looked in the members photo gallery at several Fiber-Fab cars and it seems that the alignment of the…[Read more]

  •  I can back up Hawk521’s advice on not using a computer. My Chevette based BCW has all the computer/smog stuff eliminated and does just fine without it. Also it would be wise to follow his advice and check your states requirements first. We found out that the requirements not only vary from state to state but from inspector to inspector as well.…[Read more]

  •  Hey , I still remember the feeling of relief when I got my BCW registered. Now you can ride !!! You’ve got a lot of summer left  so have fun.

  •  Richard, When I saw the pictures of Ally in the snow back in the winter as you returned from a morning drive, I was amazed that you would take her out in those conditions ,but this adventure tops that by far. I know you have some great memories and a feeling of doing something worth while as well. Give Ally a good bath and a pat on the dash…[Read more]

  •  Ed, All three theories have some credibility if you leave out the ”fool” part.
Another problem I ran in to was that the flexible hoses were blocked with gummed up brake fluid. Enough fluid would pass to at least partially apply the brakes but the return springs could not pull the shoes away from the drums and the brakes would drag just e…[Read more]

  •  Hi Buzz, The car is looking good, youv’e come a long way and done quality work.
I like Wobby’s idea of stretching the top with weights. If you have the top bows, why not mount them to 2×4 or most any old boards and position the top over them. Secure one end of the top to something solid and then hang the weights to the other end to stretch it o…[Read more]
