Keep in mind the tunnel is the backbone of the chassis and is where all the strength comes from. The frame head can be replaced but I’m not sure about the rear bulkhead. The floor pans are nothing and really don’t provide much in mechanical strength to the chassis so replacing them is not a big deal and commonly done. However I’d seriously think…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic question about fuel filters in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 7 months ago
The plastic filters are fine in the engine compartment from a heat stand point. Just make sure they aren’t touching anything that might get hot. The necessity for two filters suggests to me that you may have a dirty tank or fuel line problem. One filter should be plenty and yes they never fill up completely.
There is a lot of talk amoung the VW…[Read more] -

Thanks for the advice guys. I’m gonna order the top this week. My side curtins are in excellent condition and I sure wish he could match the fabric color but can’t. For now I’m gonna go with a dark brown stay fast canvas that will match the trim on the side curtins then later get the side curtins done to match the top. Gotta be ready for cooler…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Fuel Line in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 7 months ago
Thanks Paul. I was just wondering. I know the tank in the MG sits back further than the stock location in a beetle and wondered if a new line was run up out of the tunnel or there was a flex like running from the tank to the original fuel line in the tunnel up front.

Always amazes me why someone would put all that detail work into the outside and interior and do nothing to the engine. I’ll bet he’d get 11k if he cleaned and detailed that engine to look like the rest of the car.

The screen pictured above is commonly used on sand rails and dune buggies. It keeps the big junk from being kicked up and picked up by the fan. However if you get a plastic bag sucked into the engine compartment the vaccume created by the fan could still suck it against the screen cutting off the air flow anyway. Leaves are a slightly different…[Read more]

Learn something new every day. Always heard never bog down a VW motor. Now I know why. Thanks guys. Looks like I’m gonna be adjusting my driving habbits as well.
As for the noise. High RPM’s don’t bother you near as much when you have a pleasant exhaust note! -

Haggerty has stated value insurance. If the car is totaled you get a check for the full value you have it insured for. Full coverage liability and comprensive, under and uninsured motorist as well same as any other vehicle. Even roadside assistance and towing is included. I have 3 cars wth them. You tell them a reasonable value you want the car…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Parking Break in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 8 months ago
I’ve been thinking about doing that. Don’t know about the other models but my e-brake is way under the dash and I have to lean way over to reach it. In it’s present location we should refer to it as a parking brake cause in an emergency you’d never reach it in time.
Anyway, moving mine to between the seats would pose a problem cause my seat frame…[Read more] -

Tom Colello replied to the topic Wheel Well Paint in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 8 months ago
Duplicolor makes a truck bed coating in both rattle can and roll on. I have used both. The rattle can has almost a smooth texture but the roll on comes with a roller that leaves a rough surface. It’s basically paint with urethane solids mixed in. Gives a little rubbery protective barrier that can aid in repelling rocks or gravel impacts. I’ve used…[Read more]

Tom Colello replied to the topic Car show data sheet in the forum General Discussion 13 years, 8 months ago
Manufacturers Data Sheet shows the Allison weight with the VW drive train and a full tank of gas (14 gal) is 1718# with a weight ration of 68% rear and 32% front.
The Nissan power plant brings it up to 2478# with a full tank of gas 14 gal. They don’t specify the front to rear weight ratio on the front engine Nissan power plant. -

Does your seat sit down into something? If so you could use a piece of cardboard and rough trace it out and trim till it fits and use that for a pattern.
