An old modified stock car guy I used to race with must have had a couple 55 gallon drums of red paint. EVERYTHING on his cars that was not made of rubber or plastic was painted red…except the white number on the roof and doors.
He used to say, “If it ain’t red…it ain’t right!!!” -

http://www.thesamba.com has many threads on this. As Ed mentioned, there is even a You Tube video on the process.
I invested in a torsion bar tool for raising up one of the two Beetles I own. It rides on the bump stops now…not to mention the extreme angle of the CV joints at the hubs.
Ed, can’t you just remove the rear fenders…like a VW? -

Last I heard, Frank was in Texas and unemployed. He is retired from the Army, so maybe he at least has an income from that.
I too have sent him several e-mails and get no repsonses. I wish we could find out who hosts the website to determine if we could pay them directly and also find out how to delete the thousands of spammers.
I guess Paul’s…[Read more] -

OK…IMHO, a 1776 cc dual port longblock with 042 heads from http://www.aircooledengineering.com/
I have actually had 2 MOFOCO “Streetwise” 1776 longblocks. They were trouble free (hydraulic lifters) and had more than enough “yank” in the first Pink MG (Angelica). I’ve heard that Roy Henning (MOFOCO) has really cleaned up their act too. They are…[Read more] -

Ace: http://www.aircooledengineering.com/
These guys are near Salt Lake City, but have a premier reputation. A nice dual port 1776cc longblock will make your car very peppy. Heck, a 1641 is adeqaute too. I’d have the block modified for full flow oiling and a remote oil filter too.
I have a set of dual port dual Kadron’s that I removed from my 1776…[Read more] -

This is a DANGEROUS situation.
I had an unbuilt Ford based kit. Before I decided on “what and how” for a drivetrain, I looked a the pedal area and said…”not my size 13’s!” So, I opted for an automatic transmission. I figured left foot braking/right foot gas pedal…like when I raced go-karts. Mind you, I was using a 3.8L Buick V6, a TH200R4 OD…[Read more] -

WOW…great advice from everyone. That’s what’s nice about a being in a “club” like this forum.
My suggestion: First floor condo with a sliding glass door that has access to the driveway…take the door off the sliders and park in the dining room! Problem solved
No matter what you decide…keep in touch here. -

Serioulsy, don’t use VW replacement parts from JC Whitney. You will end up with junk that is made in China.
I suggest you join the forum on http://www.thesamba.com (it’s free) and ask about floor pan replacement there. I believe that Wolfsburg West has the thickest and highest quality VW floor pans available. They cost a little more, but this job is h…[Read more] -

The Cobra titling incident that Ed is talking about was a company called Titles Unlimited. The guy was in Georgia. I used them to “title” an unbuilt Ford based TD replica…just before he was arrested for the CA sales tax fraud. The first question he asked, “It isn’t a Cobra is it?”
Here’s how the “titling” worked. He sent me a form to complete…[Read more] -

Might I suggest Wolfsburg West for the floor pans. They are the thicker pans, not the “offshore” thin pans made from scrap metal.

My life too…I almost faint when, while at the NWS Earle Shop working on my ’40 Ford, someone will be working in another bay gets stuck on something and has a question. Then someone says, “ask that old guy over there” and they point at me!

As usual, Paul is wealth of unmarketable, but serioulsy valuable knowledge
Most of the latches, hinges, etc. can be had from a good local marine supply house (West Marine).

Also, a ceramic coater header will not only outlast a painted steel header, the under hood heat is greatly reduced. You’ll pay more, but it’s well worth it.

Stock VW engines DO NOT have head gaskets.
IMHO…never reuse a head gasket
Invest in the Robert Bentley publishers “Red Book” or “Blue Book” for a great air-cooled VW manual.Pink MG40410.4508101852 -

mrhydrant…if your 2.3L uses the progressive Holley/Weber 2 bbl. there are aftermarket air cleaners available through most VW aftermarket vendors. There are kits available for putting these carbs on a VW motor.
Check out http://www.thesamba.com classifieds for a used or new one.
