Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic MIGI Seat Size Bizare Question in the forum General Discussion 14 years, 11 months ago
Here are my thoughts:
I’m 6’4″/250 lbs. I had no problem fitting into my VW based TD replica…but I had the seat bottoms mounted almost on the floor.
These cars usually have 3 piece seats…2 bottoms and 1 seat back. The seat back is usually fixed, but the bottoms can be mounted on adjusters if you wanted to do that. However, most are mounted on…[Read more] -

Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Bug Out? in the forum Clubs and Show 14 years, 11 months ago
I may try to make it…about 4.5 hours drive for me. I joined a VW club, Central Jersey VW Society. A bunch of them are going. I’ll be driving my daily ride though. We’ll see what happens.
We should trade cell phone numbers via PM if we do go. It’s way easier to find each other that way. -

Nothing like the bugs in your teeth and the wind blowing where your hair used to be
Good idea to invent a chin strap with sideburns -

Sure looks like a Lafer to me too.
I am headed to a local guy’s house tonight afterwork to install a Pertronix Ignitor in his Lafer.

Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Master Cylinder ^68 VW in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years ago
Agreeing with what was already posted, if the master cylinder is not “bench bled” first you could run into this problem. The collapsed hoses will also cause the problem.
Keep in mind that when most of these cars were built, the donor cars were lucky to get a decent clean up, let alone any new parts!
A couple VW based tips: 1)When buying…[Read more] -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Speedometer Cable length and source in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 15 years ago
Sounds like it’s the stock Chevette cable, but it may have been supplied with the gauge.
For stock cables:
I found a 61″ cable on http://www.rockauto.com by using Chevrolet/1986/Chevette/Body-Interior as the application look-up.
Dorman #03158 (61″) for the 4 speed manual and #03159 (80″) for the 5 speed manual and automatic.
ATP #Y814 (61″) for the 4…[Read more] -

Bill,
We need to know what speedometer you have? Is it mechanical or electronic?
Most of these kits use an aftermarket electronic speedometer with a Hall Effect sender that goes in the transmission speedometer drive. So, after the speedometer is in the dashboard and the sender is screwed in the trans, only a few wires are required to be hooked…[Read more] -

I’m about 4.5 hours northeast of Chevy Chase/Washington DC.
I’d like to get another TD Replica to mess with but I’ll be forced to move out of state in early to mid 2011 due to the Fort Monmouth base closure and it’s move to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in Maryland. I am supposed to report there on 13 Feb 2011, but may just stay here until the…[Read more] -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic pinto based wire wheel conversion in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 15 years ago
The FoMoCo 4 lug wheels are 4 x 4.25″ bolt pattern and use a 1/2″ x 20 thread stud.
Pay close attention to backspace and width. If they aren’t right, you’ll have tires rubbing fenders and frame rails.
Although they look really cool…Keep in mind that wire wheels are VERY pricey, a PITA to keep clean, warp and get out of round easily and some re…[Read more] -

I checked the Knoxville, TN Craig’s list…is that’s the right Knoxville??? There is one listed that is dark green, has hub caps and is a VW based car.
Chevy Chase, MD is northwest of downtown Washinton, DC, about 11 o’clock on the Capital Beltway. That unassembled car might be worth a drive there??? -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Bridget wont start in the forum VW Based Kits 15 years ago
Exactly…and the FoMoCo draws much less current too.

Starter solenoid “heat soak” can be solved very easily. It’s the solenoid, not the starter motor that is the problem.
I did it on the GM style mini-starter on my Mustang roadracer and will also do it on my 4.3L Chevy V6’s mini-starter in my ’40 Ford streetrod.
It’s an old Hot Rodder/Racer trick of using a remote FoMoCo style solenoid. I use a…[Read more] -

Guys…aren’t the FiberFab/CMC cars all built with the front fenders molded with half an “apron”…the apron under the grille shell? So, that leaves a “split” in that apron? That used to be the dead give away to identify FiberFab/CMC TD’s.
Both of my CMC cars, one Ford based and the other VW based, had these split aprons. The Ford version fe…[Read more] -

Lots of great info on OEM (Pict-30 and 34’s) VW carb/distributor combinations on http://www.thesamba.com
One member, Glenn, is in Long Island, NY and is a VW/Bosch distributor EXPERT. He even sells completely restored units.
A few weeks agao, a guy posted a carb to distrbutor chart that would be very helpful to the VW based TD guys. -

My plans for the car were indeed raising the steering column…my legs were trapped with the way it was. That’s why it was disconnected from it’s mounts when delivered.
