Steve Crites replied to the topic Accelerator Cable in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 12 years, 7 months ago
Don, Just checked mine and it’s not much different. I lubed it a few years ago and haven’t had any problems. One time the bracket shifted and it caused a bind at the linkage, but the cable has had no problems.

John, according to this site http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgtd/mgtd_mistakes.htm re; chrome headlights.
“This one’s a lot tougher because in some cases it is correct and in others it’s not. Also there is no definitive date that I am aware of where the production of the MGTD switched from chrome to painted headlamps. Clearly if you have… -

Steve Crites replied to the topic Electronic Ignition in the forum VW Based Kits 12 years, 8 months ago
I have used them on 3 other cars, one with a CD ignition box, all have worked great. One is 12 years old and hasn’t missed a beat.
BTW, does anyone who used to drive an old points type ford remember having to find old beer pull tabs on the side of the road to set their spare points when the old ones burned out every 3 months? -
Steve Crites replied to the topic gas mileage in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 12 years, 9 months ago
I can’t help pushing the loud petal and shifting more than necessary on the curvy roads we are blessed with around here. I don’t check miles per gallon, I get more than enough smiles per gallon.

Steve Crites replied to the topic Battery life in the forum MP Lafer 12 years, 9 months ago
Ed, Yeah, it’s not easy to do when I’m thinking with my wallet, but I’ve had too many dead batterys at the worst possible times. (or the worst possible places!) That 50 lbs is extra heavy when walking to Walmart. I’ll do just about anything to keep from breaking down. Part of my OCD when it comes to cars.

Steve Crites replied to the topic Battery life in the forum MP Lafer 12 years, 9 months ago
I think most folks try to stretch their battery life way too far. If you’re past 3-4 years on a battery you’re living on borrowed time. True, a charger will help, but with my wife’s DD I don’t dare take a chance with going over 3 years. On my vehicles I might go 4 years but I never wait too long for what I know is inevitable. Better to chan…[Read more]

Run your lights through a relay instead of just through the fuse box. The lights will brighten right up.

Steve Crites replied to the topic front end alignment in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 12 years, 9 months ago
Yeah, an old timer or an old alignment shop (even better if they’re the same) are the only ones that don’t even bat an eye when I bring in my old cars for alignment.

You could respray gelcoat and have a fresh base to work on. Gelcoat can be applied with normal spray gun with 1.8 mm tip. Check out the forum of Kevin Tetz, (the guy on Spike TV “Trucks”) at paintucation.com. Lots of info there for us hobby painters/refinishers.

Steve Crites replied to the topic Chevy/Ford vs VW in the forum General Discussion 12 years, 9 months ago
Haven’t had the pleasure of driving a VW TD, but Iv’e had 4 VWs in the past. I can say that I did not look for a VW powered TD when I bought the Duchess. Kinda’ a been there, done that thing. But I will say that to me the Ford engine is a lot more forgiving than the VW since you don’t have to keep the RPMs up to make her happy and the low end…[Read more]

Steve Crites replied to the topic removing fine scratches in the forum General Discussion 12 years, 11 months ago
Greg, You’ll wear your arms out long before you get rid of scratches or other blemishes. If your gel coat is thick enough a random orbit polisher with different stages of cutting pads and media will take care of it, just really be sure it’s a random orbit or you’ll risk burning paint. If this is the only car you’ll need to work up, the cost for…[Read more]

The Budge brand, size 2, from AutoZone fits my duchess just about perfect. Allmost touches the ground all around. Have had it almost 3 years now. No complaints. Will get one again when time comes.
