Allen,I just found out I may have to cover a project for work over that same weekend.Right now it looks like I will not be able to attend.  Very sorry.Have a great time and take pics.

  • This would be a great motivator to have my rebuild done.I think I’ll just put this on the calendar and shoot for being there in person with the new wheels.

  • Roy,I’m not sure camber adjusters will change the smoothness of your steering but it will allow you to more accurately align the front end.The grub screws will grab the remaining bars just fine.Look at the following site to find out how many bars your donor car has.  http://www.vw-resource.com/years.htmlRegarding how many to remove, I followed…[Read more]

  • Hey guys, I pulled the small torsion bars out of the front assembly last night and promised to share my experience and pics.  So here goes.Since I’m on the front side of my restore my front assembly is completely accessible because there is no body on the car.  So I didn’t have to go through the process of removing tires, separating ball j…[Read more]

  • Roy,  I am mechanically minded but not a mechanic.  However, I jumped right in on the rebuild of my front suspension with the help of guys on this site and Samba. As a matter of fact I’m going to pull mine back apart this weekend and remove the smaller leaves as suggested by folks here (thanks Ed)If you want to give it a shot I (along with o…[Read more]

BDriver, The 69 vw steering box is not sealed tightly enough for a light weight oil like 90w.  Here’s a view of the seal on the bottom, which will not hold anything in a fluid form without leaking. Here are the gears in the box.  As you can see they are fairly large worm gears and simple bearing grease doesn’t “feel” like it provides sufficient f…[Read more]

  • BDriver,I’ve already broken the bj loose from the knuckle (pickle fork). But what “doohicky” are you referring to?  I think I know what your talking about but I’d love to see it.  I’ve investigated all the various tools available but I’m just not sure I want to waste my time building up my anger and not getting anything accomplished.Have you used t…[Read more]

I appreciate all the notes of caution and will proceed accordingly.BDriver, those are the ebrake tubes you are looking at.  I already pulled the old brake lines and will be replacing them with something shiny and new.  I’ve checked the movement on the ebrake lines and there is still life and flexibility in them.  However the handle needs re…[Read more]

mrlmd,I didn’t like the fact that the copper line was rattling around in the tunnel and figured that if I was going to spend time trying to anchor it I might just go ahead and replace it with new.  I also figured that since I had it all trimmed back to the frame I should replace key potential points of failure while I had the opportunity. And f…[Read more]

  • Yes it is an automatic…sorry should have said that in the beginning. Thanks 1oldbuzz.  That explains the missing horns.  I’ve been searching the Samba site and haven’t hit on it yet but I’ll keep looking with the new info. Also, now that I look at the photo above I see that the last character is an “E” not a “1”

By the way, for reference sake, in the picture below the three guys on the right are my sons.  In front is the welder (youngest), in the middle (the middle son) is the “theme carpenter”, and in the back (oldest) is the computer geek and reading maniac.  The guy on the left is one of their friends. You’ll see more of them in the coming months so I w…[Read more]

Paul,Awesome information and links!  This will all be very helpful. Who knows, maybe I’ll start my own web page for this journey.I did some research before I started all this fun and was able to purchase floor pans with the “bulkhead” included.  So I think I’m good there.I’ve also found a replacement frame head (front bulkhead) that includes n…[Read more]

  • Thanks for all your kind words and personal stories.  I know we all have them. Please rest assured I was in no way offended or discouraged by anyone’s feedback on the condition of my chassis.  I had 4 kids remember…pretty thick skin.Allen, the body is in near perfect condition.  All we are going to do is sand it down and change the two tone co…[Read more]

So if I were to consider a more robust donor frame where would I start to look for one.So far my search has only uncovered full cars at full price.

  • Rick replied to the topic Got the body off in the forum VW Based Kits 13 years, 2 months ago

BDriver, cmon.  I’m trying to stay positive about this.  Especially considering what I paid for the “car”.  I figure if my son the welder says he can repair what I have then I’m in.  Besides, it’s a VW…I can find parts anywhere.Anyway, I haven’t had a good challenge in a long time and this will be a good distraction from desk job.

  • Ok.  Everything has been broken lose and is ready to lift off.  The kids will be here tomorrow and we’ll get the body off.  Then I’ll start on the pans.Since the kids couldn’t make it today I also started disconnecting the engine for removal.  Pretty simple but I marked everything for reconnection anyway.  Once I get something to set it in on I’ll…[Read more]
