OK here’s the “Pink MG” story.
Back in 1952 the other person in my family enamored with the ’52 MG-TD was my mother. My Dad like big cars and could not fit into an MG, thinking they were ridiculous excuses for a car. He was 6’8″ tall and weighed 300 pounds. Although he sometimes car pooled with a guy who had several Crosley’s. Go Figure
I used to…[Read more] -

Wow, some great stuff here…I read a few time that we were all enamored with the TD at very young ages. That goes for me too. In fact, it’s how I got the handle “Pink MG”. That’s in another thread on the names of our cars.
I was born with 10w-40 blood. I never remember NOT being totally cativated by cars. Models Cars, Slot Cars, Go-Karts, Race…[Read more] -

I’ve had a very bad experience with Grundy. The cancelled me after my Oct 2007 – Oct 2008 insurance year. I had been with them for over 10 years.
My personal opinion of Grundy is that they suck. What a bunch or morons! They are not an insurer, they are an Insurance Agency. They screwed me around and had lousy customer service.
Actually is was t…[Read more] -

Pretty ironic that the MG logo in shadow on our home page is “Safety Fast”.
Ringo brings up a good point. These cars, for the most part, were built from donor cars/parts that 25 years and some even older!
Rubber parts especially, do not last that long. I always caution people that are driving Ford and GM based cars to install new timing belts…[Read more] -

Yup…
VW’s are very simply engineered and were designed to be easy to work on. Their floor pan (rolling chassis) were made to accept different types of vehicles, hence the suspension was made to have an adjustable in spring rate. Keep in mind that they were designed in the 1930’s by Ferdinand Porsche under the commission of the Nazi Government.…[Read more] -

Wolfpow,
Your floor pan is a ’68 and newer. The easy way to tell if you have a Swing Axle (‘pre ’68) or IRS (’68-up) is to look at the rear wheels. 4 lugs are IRS and “wide 5” lugs are swing axle.
Because either front beam (ball joint or kin pin) can be fitted to a VW floor pan, looking at the rear wheels for this is best. The IRS pans are…[Read more] -

That Pinto explosion would have happened to any car. It was just filled with gas and the attendant left the cap off. The Pinto was stopped on a metal grate bridge when it was rear ended by a drunk driver in a pick-up truck. The filler neck on those cars was located samck in the middle of the “TV Panel”, as was the Gen 1 Mustangs and a whole bunch…[Read more]

How much play is in the ring gear? Did you pull the axles in/out & up and down?
If the axles or diff carrier had a bad bearing, it usually makes a clicking sound, universals usually make a clunking sound.
The “jingling” sound you describe only happens when coasting or decelleration (in gear)?
Wish we were there to listen! -
Mark Hendrickson replied to the topic Ford Kit Steering Column Problem in the forum Chevy/Ford Kits 16 years, 9 months ago
You’ve already fixed the rag joint, but there are also many different universals available from Borgeson. I sues then on all the steering columns I build. The not only allow for clearance probalmes, but eliminate the “spongey” steering feel of a rag joint.
By the way, Pinto, Mustang II and Mercury Bobcat are all the same basic car that shared all…[Read more] -

Ringo…Racer Walsh in Florida and Esslinger’s in California may have what you need. Racer Walsh is primarily road racing stuff and Esslinger builds circle track Midget engines (USAC, etc.) the 2.3L Ford Lima engine is one of the engines they have tons of parts for. I posted the link for the $135 Esslinger Aluminum Valve Cover.

Why not convert to an Alternator? All of the VW vendors offer these kits that include everything you need except the “stand” which is simple to swap. It eliminates the external voltage regulator too. Alternators are much more efficient too.
I’d also check the cooling fan for cracks around the center of the hub. They are very common…and a…[Read more] -

Neil,
If your car is Chevette based, the steering wheel adapter is a standard GM unit. Grant Steering wheels offer a myriad of designs

I used a Grant wheel and billet adapter on my Chevette based BCW TD. It’s similar to Geoff’s. You can order their products via Summit or Jegs as well as locally from your area Speed Shop. -

Hey Ron,
Yes what Paul said is correct. The kit manufacturers were not interested in safety or ride, just ride height. The “cut one tube and turn it” method of modifying the VW twin front bean is to get the correct ride height only. It doesn’t change the spring rate.
Shocks only dampen spring movement. It’s the spring rate that is causing your…[Read more] -

Dave (and others), Moss Motors (or any other vendor for that matter) has not had new TD grille shells for years.
I’ll bet some survive as NOS in unbuilt kits that are getting harder and harder to find.
